Adjustable gastric banding is a type of bariatric surgery and the first kind to use robots to perform the procedure. For the procedure, the patient is anaesthetized and made to sleep on the back with the arms and legs wide open (low lithotomic position) because the procedure is performed between the patient’s legs. Multiple incisions are made on the abdomen and trocars are placed. The patient is then placed on the reverse side for a better view of the gastro-oesophageal junction. An adjustable silicone ring is passed around the stomach giving it an hourglass appearance. Due to a size reduction, only a small amount of food can be held in the stomach thereby restricting your food intake. Since the stomach has a smaller outlet, the emptying of the stomach (transit time) takes a longer time, hence you will feel full for a longer time. This results in weight loss. Post-surgery, you will be given liquids and mashed food. After about 2 weeks, you can start soft foods and in about 6 weeks, you will be able to eat small quantities of your regular diet.
