Dental Implant Surgery is a procedure involving the replacement of a missing tooth with an artificial one using metal screws that are drilled into the jawbone. These screws replace the tooth roots, thus providing a strong foundation for artificial teeth and restoring their ability to chew or their appearance.
After the completion of osseointegration, an ‘abutment’, which serves as a connection piece between the dental implant and the artificial tooth, is placed over the dental implant metal post by removing the gum. Artificial teeth are then chosen after the gums heal and are fixed into the metal frame that is attached to the implant abutment.
Patients who are good candidates for Dental Implants may have the following criteria, which include those with:
Existing unstable dentures, causing dissatisfaction in them
Removable partial dentures, improving their retention, functionality, and comfort
Dental Implants are not suitable for patients with acute illnesses, those with significant defects or anomalies in the jawbone, uncontrolled metabolic disease, or certain infections that affect the bone or soft tissues. However, caution is advised for patients with diabetes, osteoporosis, HIV/AIDS, parafunctional habits such as teeth grinding, and any behavioural, psychosocial, or psychiatric disorders. Moreover, careful consideration is given to patients undergoing Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy of the head and neck, and Bisphosphonate medications for bone disease.
Our specialists will discuss expected outcomes, benefits, possible risks, the total duration of the procedure, and post-care instructions, and see whether you are a good candidate for dental implants. Apart from these, you must consider several factors to decide whether you are prepared for the commitment and follow-up care required, which include:
Refraining from smoking or chewing tobacco before the procedure
Adhering to post-care instructions after every step of the procedure and attending regular follow-up appointments
Talking with your specialist regarding the type of anaesthesia or sedation administered
Arranging your transportation to and from the hospital
During your consultation, your reasons for requiring Dental Implants and medical history are discussed. You may have to inform our specialist if you have any co-morbidities, such as heart conditions, any cardiac or orthopaedic implants, or are taking any medications, including blood thinners, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or vitamin supplements. A comprehensive dental exam is then taken with X-rays or computed tomography (CT) scans, followed by the creation of 3D models of your teeth and jaw. Based on your assessment, the number of teeth that need to be replaced and the condition of your jaw bone, a personalised approach to the procedure will be considered.
The entire process of Dental Implant Surgery usually takes many months, with the majority of the time devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone. Placement of an artificial tooth may, however, take 3 to 4 months after your implants are done. Specialists from multiple domains are included for your Dental Implant procedure, such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon specialising in the mouth, jaw, and face; a periodontist for treating structures that support the teeth, such as bones and gums; a prosthodontist to design and fit artificial teeth; and an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. Therefore, our specialists will let you know the expected treatment time based on your case report.
Dental Implants offer various benefits over other dental procedures, including:
Highly durable
Long-term oral health
Enhanced comfort and speech
Possible risks associated with Dental Implant Surgery may occur during or after the procedure, some of which include:
Presence of heavy bleeding on the floor of the mouth
Nerve injury
Incision-line opening
Exposed implants
Mobility of the implant in rare cases, including loosening due to certain infections or smoking
General instructions you can follow to care for your Dental Implants after the procedure include:
Informing any medical professionals or nurses that you have dental implants before undergoing any diagnostic testing, such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Sticking to soft diets during your recovery and avoiding hot drinks or food a week after surgery.
Abstaining from alcohol and smoking during your recovery.
Seeking medical attention if the implant loosens or causes severe pain.
Performing professional cleanings every 6 months after the procedure.
Avoiding grinding or chewing hard items, such as hard or ice candy.
Wearing professionally made mouth guards while playing vigorous sports or moving heavy objects, along with practising caution.
