Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas; inflammation causes swelling and pain. The pancreas helps with digestion and is in charge of regulating blood sugar levels. It generates digestive enzymes like amylase as well as hormones like insulin. The pancreatic duct transports digestive enzymes to your small intestine. Most typically, alcohol or gallstones obstructing the pancreatic duct cause pancreatic injuries. Your immune system's reaction to an injury is inflammation, which is meant to aid in the healing of damaged tissues.
Causes: The main causes of acute pancreatitis are:
Presence of gallstones
Excessive alcohol abuse
Pancreatic cancers
Certain medications
Injury or trauma
Treatment:
Pancreatitis cannot be cured with a particular medication. A hospital stay is required to address symptoms and problems before treatment may begin. Among them are:
Pain medications
Intravenous fluids
Nutrition

There are 2 different types based on the mode of occurrence:
Acute: This is a transient condition. It occurs as your pancreas tries to heal after a minor, transient injury. By providing supportive care, which includes rest, fluids, and painkillers, most patients with acute pancreatitis will fully recover in a few days. On the other hand, severe acute pancreatitis can result in major health issues, some of which are potentially fatal.
Chronic: Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive, long-lasting illness. It persists and becomes worse with time. It occurs when your pancreas sustains continuous injury or damage. Your pancreas will eventually suffer permanent damage from chronic pancreatitis, though it can take years. Your pancreas' tissues become scarred (fibrosis) as a result of ongoing inflammation, which prevents the organs from producing hormones and enzymes.
The identical pathway that your pancreatic duct uses to empty bile from your gallbladder into your intestine is also used by your common bile duct. A gallstone that gets lodged in the common bile duct can momentarily obstruct the pancreatic duct's ability to empty its contents. Your pancreatic enzymes are trapped as a result. The enzymes become active and start to break down the organ itself when pressure builds up behind the obstruction. Gallstone pancreatitis is an inflammatory reaction brought on by obstruction.
Signs and symptoms may vary from person to person. Some of the common symptoms are:
Pain in the upper belly
Fever
Rapid pulse
Vomiting
Tenderness around the upper belly
Pain from the upper belly radiates to the back
Factors that increase your risk of pancreatitis include:
Excessive alcohol use: As per research, more than 500 mL a day has a potential risk of developing pancreatitis.
Obesity: People with a high percentage of BMI have a risk of developing pancreatitis.
History of pancreatitis in the family: Chronic pancreatitis has been related to several genes. Elevated risk is associated with a family history of the condition, particularly when paired with other risk factors.
Smoking: Smokers have an average three-fold increased risk of developing chronic pancreatitis as compared to nonsmokers. Reducing tobacco use can lower the risk.
Acute pancreatitis can strike anyone at any age, although it is more common in middle-aged and older adults. Pancreatitis connected to alcohol is more common in men, although gallstones in women are more likely to cause it.
Within one to two weeks, the inflammation either fully resolves or significantly improves in 80% of patients with acute pancreatitis. However, it is typically treated in a hospital because it can occasionally result in serious problems.
Acute pancreatitis treatment could involve supportive care. In cases where the underlying cause of your pancreatitis has been identified and treated, the focus of your care will be on promoting your body's natural healing mechanisms. Typically, this comprises:
Pain relief: You’ll have medication delivered through an IV directly to your bloodstream or by mouth.
IV fluids: Hydration is the most important part of treatment, as acute pancreatitis leads to dehydration.
Nutrition: Your doctors may decide to use an intravenous line to give you nutrients in extremely serious situations.
Tube feeding: If you’re unable to tolerate food by mouth, your doctors may administer food via a tube placed through the nose or stomach to help you get enough nutrition.
Gallstone removal: If you have gallstone pancreatitis, your provider may need to remove an impacted gallstone from your bile ducts. They’ll also recommend Gallbladder Removal Surgery to prevent gallstones from causing you future problems. Procedures may include:
Pancreatitis can cause serious complications, including
Renal failure: The kidneys may not remove waste products from the blood due to acute pancreatitis. Dialysis, or artificial filtering, may be required for either a short-term or long-term course of treatment.
Infection: The pancreas may become more vulnerable to infections as a result of acute pancreatitis. Aggressive therapy is required for severe pancreatic infections, which may involve surgery or other techniques to remove contaminated tissue.
Breathing issues: Acute pancreatitis modifies lung tissues, which progressively lowers blood oxygen levels and lung function.
Malnutrition: The pancreas may not generate enough digestive enzymes in cases of acute or chronic pancreatitis. Malnutrition, diarrhoea, and weight loss may result from this.
Pancreatic cancer: Long-standing inflammation in the pancreas is a risk factor for cancer of the pancreas.
Pseudocyst: A pseudocyst is a "pocket" in the pancreas where fluid and debris can accumulate as a result of both acute and chronic pancreatitis. Ruptures of big pseudocysts can result in consequences like infection and internal bleeding.
