Interventional Radiology procedures have become quite popular these days as they help in the effective diagnosis and treatment of various conditions. Biopsies and Drainages treatments in Bhubaneswar are minimally invasive procedures in which imaging guidance such as CT, MRI, or ultrasound is used for an accurate diagnosis. In a Biopsy, a small suspected tissue sample is removed, which is then investigated in a laboratory to diagnose various medical conditions, such as cancer, inflammatory diseases, or infections. Whereas, in the Drainage procedure, the catheter is inserted to remove the excess fluid, pus, or other fluid collection. Both procedures are carried out using minimally invasive techniques and under imaging guidance, often performed together in one session. As these are less invasive Interventional Radiology procedures, they offer various benefits over other surgical methods, like shorter recovery times, less pain, and a reduced risk of complications. These are conducted under local anaesthesia, so you won't feel pain or discomfort.
Manipal Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, has a team of experienced interventional radiologists who use their expertise in imaging techniques to precisely target the area under investigation, using Biopsy and Drainage procedures, ensuring effective treatment outcomes while minimising damage to surrounding tissues. We prioritise patient comfort and provide accurate diagnosis, improving patient outcomes.
There are different types of Biopsies, including:
Image-guided Biopsy: In this imaging technique, technologies like CT scans, ultrasounds, or MRI scans are used to direct the needle to the right area for an accurate diagnosis.
Bone Biopsy: This is used for the diagnosis of cancer of the bones.
Aspiration Biopsy: This is called fine-needle aspiration, which withdraws liquid material out of a mass.
Surgical Biopsy: For hard-to-reach tissues, open or laparoscopic surgery is done to remove either a piece of the tissue or the whole lump.
Endoscopic Biopsy: This is done using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached. It can be done using radiology or surgically.
Also, based on the location where the biopsy is done, they are of different types, like skin biopsy, liver biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, kidney biopsy, and prostate biopsy.
Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications, as you will need to stop taking certain drugs such as aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications before the procedure.
If you are pregnant or suspected of being pregnant, inform your doctor beforehand.
A few hours of fasting may be required before the surgery.
Inform your doctor regarding any allergies.
Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you may be sedated.
Depending on the type of biopsy, you may be given specific instructions to follow.
Certain blood tests or other diagnostic tests will be done before assessing your medical condition.
During the procedure, you will have to change into a hospital gown.
The area of insertion will be cleaned and sterilised before starting the procedure.
You will be asked to lie in a comfortable position and will be given local or general anaesthesia.
An initial scan using a CT or ultrasound may be done to plan the procedure.
A small cut will be made to your skin, where a fine biopsy needle is inserted to remove the tissue sample.
By using an ultrasound machine, CT scanner, or X-ray machine, the needle will be accurately guided to the correct position for obtaining the biopsy sample.
The table will be moved in and out of the scanner multiple times throughout a CT biopsy, and you will be instructed to breathe on occasion.
The sample withdrawn will be sent to the laboratory for detailed investigation under a microscope.
The Biopsy can take around 20-30 minutes, depending on the type of procedure used.
If the Drainage procedure is carried out along with the Biopsy, then after the Biopsy is completed, a catheter will be inserted into the area where the fluid needs to be drained.
Under imaging guidance, the catheter is directed to an accurate location, and the accumulated fluid is allowed to drain from the body.
After the procedure is completed, slight pressure will be applied, and a bandage or dressing will be placed.
Biopsy and Drainage procedures are done on an outpatient basis.
You will be shifted to a recovery room until you wake up, and your vitals will be monitored.
If your vitals are stable and there are no complications, you can go home after that.
You will be given post-procedure instructions on how to care for the Biospy site.
Also, will inform you when to come back for results and follow-up appointments.
Though these are generally safe procedures, they carry some risks, such as:
Excessive bleeding
Allergic reactions
Pain at the site of needle or catheter insertion
Bruising at the site of insertion
Injury to specific structures or organs
Fluid leak or dysfunction
Our interventional radiologists will take all precautions to minimise these risks as far as possible. Also, report immediately to your doctor if you experience any of these complications.
