FAQ's

Our Department of Medical Oncology addresses various types of cancer, which include:

  • Carcinoma: A type of cancer that develops in the epithelial tissue. It usually occurs in cells found in the skin or the lining of organs. Examples include prostate cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.

  • Sarcoma: This type of cancer originates in the connective tissues of our body, such as bones and soft tissues. This involves fats, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments. Examples include Ewing’s sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcomas.

  • Leukaemia: This subtype of cancer occurs in the blood and affects the haematopoietic system, which is responsible for blood cell production, including white blood cells (leucocytes). Examples include acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and multiple myeloma (MM).

  • Lymphoma: This category of cancer occurs in the lymphatic system and consists of two types: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Our specialists utilise a range of diagnostic procedures to ensure an accurate cancer diagnosis, some of which include:

  • Lab tests, such as total blood count (CBC), liver function test (LFT), kidney function test (KFT), and urinalysis.

  • Imaging scans such as computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, fludeoxyglucose-18 positron emission tomography (FDG PET) scans, and ultrasonography.

  • Biopsy, such as Needle Biopsy, Bone Marrow Biopsy, Excisional or Incisional Biopsy, and Frozen Biopsy

  • Tumour marker testing for detecting biological molecules produced by tumour cells, such as CEA for colorectal cancer, BRCA mutation for breast and ovarian cancer, and EGFR mutation in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC)

  • Next-generation sequencing (NGS)

A grade of cancer is defined as the degree of abnormality in cancer cells and tissues when examined under a microscope in comparison to healthy cells. The stage of cancer involves determining the size of the primary tumour and the extent of cancer spread within the patient’s body. The cancer grading scale involves 4 different types of grades, with low-grade tumours closely resembling healthy ones and high-grade cancers with greater abnormalities in cell appearance and organisation. Moreover, some cancers have their own grading systems, such as the Nottingham grading system for breast cancer and the Gleason grading system for prostate cancer. The staging system for cancer usually follows TNM staging (tumour, lymph node, metastasis), while cancers like chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and gynaecological cancers use the Rai staging system and FIGO staging, respectively.

Medical oncologists usually consider the patient’s age, general condition, possible side effects, stage, and grade of cancer. Usual cancer treatments aim to cure cancer, while in some cases, the goal is to minimise cancer progression and enhance an individual’s quality of life (palliative care). Moreover, our medical oncologists often assess the aggressiveness, recurrence rate, chances of recovery, and evidence-based guidelines to determine our patient’s treatment plans.

Neoadjuvant Therapy is usually given before surgery to reduce tumour size and prevent metastasis (the spread of tumour cells to other organs). It focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of the primary treatment, usually surgery, and potentially minimising its invasiveness. On the other hand, Adjuvant Therapy is given after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells and reduce cancer recurrence.
