I, Dr Ankita Patil was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) in January 2017. I had also undergone a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) in June 2017.  I was fortunate to have got Dr. Mallikarjun Kalashetty as my treating Hematologist.  To me, Dr. Mallikarjun is synonymous with GOD. In dealing with such a life threatening disease which required a long course of treatment, he has given me immense courage and strength to face it with utmost ease. His empathetic nature and his efforts to reduce my sufferings are indeed very commendable. His face reflects his inner conflict and agony when he witnesses his patient’s bearings. An amazing and a wonderful human being indeed. Being a doctor myself, he is and will always be a huge inspiration for me whenever I practice as a consultant. The different aspects of my entire treatment wouldn’t have gone smoothly if it weren’t for him. He has literally helped me get a second life after all this turmoil with a deadly disease.

A special mention must be made about Dr. Poonam Patil, a senior Oncologist who also gave me immense courage to fight this illness. She is always so cheerful and has  a smile on her face which used to give me so much positive energy whenever I was admitted for Chemotherapy or any other complication.  She is an extremely caring doctor and always took very good care of me.

Also a mention about   Dr. Shabeer Zaveri, senior Oncosurgeon and his entire team who had inserted my Chemoport so efficiently and took utmost care whenever I had problems with the Chemoport.

A big thanks to Dr. Swati Pai, the Head of Department of Pathology who was very prompt in reviewing all my reports and always kept me informed about them, especially when in dire need, which was very helpful indeed.

Also a big round of thanks to all the MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit) and CCU (Critical Care Unit) doctors and staff members who took such good care of me when I was admitted with severe Dengue. They gave me the best treatment possible and hence I was able to recover fast from all the complications of Dengue.

I would also like to mention about the entire nursing staff of Manipal Hospital, mainly the 6th and 7th floor (Oncology wards) nurses who were like my friends, were so efficient and took such good care of me always whenever I was admitted. And of course the BMT unit sisters who were so meticulous in their work and always on their toes to attend to me for any problem. I never got bored or depressed in that isolated BMT unit during my 3 weeks stay because they always used to give me so much positive energy with their lively behavior. A special mention to the Day Care Injection room (4th floor) sisters who helped me during the entire Chemotherapy sessions of mine and they were extremely efficient and took good care of me at all times.

Also I would like to thank all the Oncology OPD sisters and the reception staff who were always very sweet and helpful.

The entire Lab (Blood collection) staff on -1 floor who greeted me well and always helped me to get my reports on time.

As I finally finish my course of treatment and depart to resume my residency in Nephrology at Mumbai, I cannot thank Manipal Hospital (Old airport road) enough for all this treatment and care given to me. A very clean, very well equipped hospital with the best doctors and best nursing staff and management. Thank you Manipal, YOU definitely are the best hospital ever!!

Dr. Ankita D. Patil
