Causes of Yellowing Teeth - How to Whiten Teeth Naturally

Tooth discolouration or yellow stains on teeth are a common cosmetic concern. There are many reasons why teeth can become discoloured, some of which are preventable. In this blog, we will discuss the causes of tooth discolouration or yellowing teeth, how to remove yellow stains from teeth naturally, how to clean yellow teeth at home, and other treatments for yellow teeth.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

There are two main types of tooth discolouration:

  1. Extrinsic Stain: This type of stain affects the outer layer of the tooth (enamel). It is caused by substances that stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, cigarettes, and certain foods.
  2. Intrinsic Stain: This type of stain affects the inner layer of the tooth (dentin). It can be caused by several factors, including medications, trauma to the tooth, excessive fluoride exposure, and certain medical conditions.

Here are some of the most common causes of yellow teeth:

  • Certain foods and drinks can stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, soda, and dark fruits.
  • Smoking and tobacco use can stain teeth and irritate the gums.
  • If you don't brush and floss your teeth regularly, plaque and tartar can build up on your teeth, which can cause them to appear yellow.
  • Teeth naturally become more yellow as we age. This is because the enamel layer thins over time, allowing the dentin to show through.
  • Certain medications, such as tetracycline and doxycycline, can stain teeth if they are taken during tooth development.
  • If a tooth is injured, it can become discoloured.
  • Some people are more prone to tooth discolouration than others due to genetics.

Visiting your dentist every six months will ensure proper maintenance and protection of your teeth from issues like excess deposits and cavities, says Dr. Chandramohan Raju, Dental Surgeon, Manipal Northside Hospital, Malleshwaram. Watch the video below to know more:

How to Remove Yellow Stains from Teeth Naturally?

There are several things you can do to remove yellow stains from teeth naturally.

Here are some natural ways:

  1. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that can help to remove surface stains from teeth. Make a paste of baking soda and water and brush your teeth with it for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

  2. Strawberries contain malic acid, which can help to whiten teeth. Make a paste of strawberries and baking soda and brush your teeth with it for two minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

  3. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent that can help to whiten teeth. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with three parts water and use it as a mouthwash for one minute. Rinse thoroughly. It is important to note that hydrogen peroxide can irritate the gums, so do not use it more than once a week.

  4. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes to remove toxins from the body.  While studies have shown that oil pulling can reduce plaque and gingivitis, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that it can whiten teeth.

How to Clean Yellow Teeth at Home

In addition to the natural remedies listed above, there are several things you can do at home to clean yellow teeth:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Floss once a day. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth.
  3. Use a tongue scraper. A tongue scraper can help to remove bacteria and debris from your tongue, which can help to improve your breath and make your teeth appear whiter.
  4. See a dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. A dentist can remove plaque and tartar that you can't remove at home. They can also recommend professional whitening treatments.

Yellow Teeth Treatment

There are several professional teeth whitening treatments available, including:

  1. In-office Whitening: This type of whitening is performed by a dentist in their office. The dentist will apply a bleaching gel to your teeth and then use a light to activate the gel. In-office whitening is the most effective way to whiten teeth.

  2. Take-home Whitening: This type of whitening involves using a bleaching gel at home. Your dentist will provide you with custom-made trays that you will fill with the gel and wear for a certain amount of time each day. Take-home whitening is less effective than in-office whitening, but it is more convenient.

  3. Whitening Toothpaste and Mouthwash: There are several whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes available over the counter. These products can help to remove surface stains, but they are not as effective as professional whitening treatments.

While coffee stains and ageing can leave your smile lacklustre, achieving pearly whites is possible! Brushing, flossing, and natural remedies like baking soda can help. Consider professional whitening for stubborn stains. Remember, regular dental checkups are key for optimal oral health and a radiant smile. So brush up on your habits and consult a dentist to unlock your brightest smile yet!

FAQ's

Yes, tooth discolouration can be reversed in many cases. It depends on the severity and cause of the discolouration. Surface stains (extrinsic) are usually easier to remove than deeper stains (intrinsic).

Veneers and bonding are great options for covering severely discoloured teeth. If you have a single discoloured tooth, consulting a dentist about these options might be best.

Depending on the cause of discolouration, you might go for whitening, veneers, bonding, or other treatments.

Yes, certain antibiotics, like tetracycline and doxycycline, can cause tooth discolouration if taken during tooth development (childhood or pregnancy).

Bleaching can be very effective in lightening tooth discolouration, especially for extrinsic stains. There are two main types of professional whitening treatments (in-office and take-home) that utilise bleaching agents. However, it's important to consult a dentist to determine if bleaching is suitable for your situation.

Tooth discolouration, also referred to as yellow teeth, is a change in the natural colour of your teeth.

Tetracycline antibiotics can stain developing teeth by interfering with the minerals that form tooth enamel.

Fillings typically don't cause discolouration themselves. However, over time, the filling material might stain and appear different from the surrounding tooth.
