When a pregnancy test indicates positive, it signals the beginning of a life-altering journey in the life of a woman. Just knowing how to take good care of yourself and following healthy habits and lifestyle during pregnancy is not enough. It is important to be aware of some of the best ways to prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy. Some useful tips are as follows:

  • Improve your eating habits: Your body needs to be in a good condition even before the onset of pregnancy in order for it to cope well with the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy. Eat nutritious foods containing whole grains, fiber which will nourish your body.
  • Pre-conception visit to the doctor: Before pregnancy, a woman must visit a doctor to get herself checked on various factors such as medical history, present health condition, diet etc. which need to be discussed before pregnancy.
  • Plenty of exercises: The importance of regular physical activity before, during and after pregnancy cannot be stressed enough. Being active before pregnancy helps you remain active during this phase.
  • Genetic Screening: It is medically recommended for every couple to undergo carrier screening to detect the presence of any previously unknown genetic illnesses which may be detrimental to the health of the baby.
  • De-stress yourself: Stress suppresses ovulation, decreases sperm count and also the sex drive. It can also reduce blood circulation.  Take some time out to indulge in activities like meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, relaxing showers etc. to manage stress effectively.
  • Give up alcohol and smoking: Addiction to alcohol and nicotine can lead to complications like miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight babies.
  • Gluten-free diet: This helps address the issue of unexplained infertility and gives better pregnancy results.
  • Select the right prenatal care, labor and delivery options: Do a bit of research on what sort of care would you prefer: from an obstetrician or a certified nurse-midwife. Also, decide on whether you would like to go for a natural or medicated birth and investigate your options.
  • Visit your dentist: This might not be apparent at first glance. But, during pregnancy, sometimes the gums may tend to bleed. Periodontal disease is linked to underweight babies, so ensure you have good oral hygiene.
  • Limit your exposure to toxins: Stay away from plastic water bottles and containers, use only organic products, and dress in organic cotton to avoid the toxins present in the air, food, water and clothes.
  • Avoid obese conditions: Obesity and even a low Body Mass Index (BMI) increase the risk of complications in pregnancy. Maintain optimum body weight.
  • Think Positive: Negativity can drag you down and adversely impact not only your mental health but also your physical well-being. Read books and engage in positive activities to ensure you are not bogged down by those negative thoughts and feelings.

Proper care is vital at every minute for a healthy pregnancy. Remember, your child’s health and proper development are in your hands. Make the required changes and ensure a safe and healthy future for you and your child.
