The surgical removal of the uterus is called a hysterectomy. It is performed when the uterus is afflicted by uterine fibroids, cancer, uterine prolapse (moving out of position), adenomyosis (abnormal thickening of uterine walls), endometriosis and other abnormalities in the uterus that threaten the patient's health. Typically, a hysterectomy is a last resort procedure where the uterus is cancerous or otherwise dangerous to the patient.
