FAQ's

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaw, face, and neck. They have the expertise to treat head and neck cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders, tooth impactions, cysts and tumours of the jaw, and diseases affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections.

Maxillofacial Surgery is usually employed to relieve pain and improve jaw function, and appearance. The scope of treatment available in Maxillofacial Surgery is as follows:

  • Treatment of oral diseases

  • Management of dental infections

  • Replacing missing teeth with dental implants

  • Removing wisdom or impacted teeth

  • Jaw reconstruction to restore normal bite

  • Bone grafting to restore the bone width

  • Treatment of injuries in the mouth, jaw, or face

  • Surgical interventions and management of cleft lip and palate

  • Diagnosis and treatment of cyst and cancer in head and neck region

  • Orthognathic surgeries

  • Treatment for facial fractures

Orthognathic Surgery refers to jaw surgery that aims to correct upper and lower jaw deformities. Most procedures are performed alongside orthodontic treatment (braces) to achieve optimal aesthetic and functional results.

It is a challenging procedure that helps treat acquired jaw defects following ablative tumour surgery or trauma to the oro-facial region. Without the procedure, the patients often suffer from reduced quality of life which includes impaired speech, chewing and swallowing, or aesthetics. After the reconstruction is complete patients are advised to undergo rehabilitation to restore jaw functionality.

Almost every person missing one or more teeth and having good health is a candidate for dental implants. A candidate's appropriateness for the surgery is dependent on the quantity and quality of their jaw bone. However, oral maxillofacial surgeons can treat patients with significant bone loss with bone reconstruction procedures, enabling them to be candidates for dental implants.

You will meet with our maxillofacial surgeon, who will ask about your symptoms, take your medical history, and collect information on current medications you take. Following the examination of your oral cavity and surrounding structures, further tests such as dental X-rays may be ordered to obtain a detailed view of the affected area

Depending on the complexity of the condition, some maxillofacial procedures are performed on an outpatient basis while a few other conditions may require multiple surgeries to achieve the desired results. All the procedures are performed under anaesthesia. At the end of the procedure, stitches may be placed and the wound is packed to facilitate healing.

If you are treated on an outpatient basis, you can return home after the procedure. Individuals administered general anaesthesia are monitored in the hospital until its effect wears off. All patients will be prescribed painkillers to alleviate pain. You may experience some amount of bleeding, bruising, and limitation in jaw movements post-surgery.

Our healthcare provider will provide you with instructions before discharge, which includes:

  • Applying ice packs to reduce swelling

  • Consuming liquid or semi-solid diet

  • Avoiding alcohol and tobacco for a few days post-surgery

  • Rinse your teeth instead of brushing

  • Ensure you rest adequately

Depending on the type of surgery, your surgeon may recommend a liquid or soft-food diet.

Post-surgery, swelling in your face may continue for two to three days, and subside afterwards. You must check with your surgeon if the swelling worsens after three days.
