The common cold is one of the most common childhood illnesses worldwide. Infants and children are affected more frequently and have more severe symptoms than adults.
The common cold is a collection of symptoms caused by a variety of viruses. There are over 100 different types of rhinovirus, the type of virus that causes the majority of colds. Other viruses that cause colds include enteroviruses (echoviruses and coxsackieviruses) and coronaviruses, including the virus that causes COVID-19, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Because there are so many viruses that cause the symptoms of the common cold, people may experience multiple colds per year and dozens throughout their lives. Cold-cough treatment in Begur, Bangalore at Manipal Hospitals has best treatment plans.
Children under the age of six get six to eight colds per year (up to one per month from September to April), with symptoms lasting 14 days on average.. Young children in daycare appear to catch more colds than children at home. Day-care children, on the other hand, catch fewer colds when they enter primary school, presumably because they are already immune to a greater number.
Causes of infection
Common cold can be caused due to several reason which might lead to severe symptoms among them. Some of the reasons are as follows,
Seasonal patterns — Although the common cold can occur at any time of year, the majority of colds occur during the fall and winter months, regardless of geographic location. Colds are not caused by cold weather or exposure to cold air.
Colds are spread from person to person, either through direct contact or through contact with the virus in the environment. Colds spread the most during the first two to four days.
People with colds typically carry the cold virus on their hands, where it can infect another person for at least two hours. If a cold-infected child touches another child or adult, who then touches their eye, nose, or mouth, the virus can infect that person.
Infection from surface particles — Some cold viruses can survive for up to a day on surfaces (such as countertops, door handles, or toys).
Inhaling viral particles — Viral particle-containing droplets can be exhaled into the air through breathing or coughing. Rhinoviruses are typically not transmitted through contact with infected droplets, whereas influenza virus and coronavirus can be transmitted through small droplets. Cold viruses are rarely transmitted through saliva.
Symptoms
Cold symptoms usually appear one to two days after being exposed. Nasal congestion is the most common symptom in children. Children may also have clear, yellow, or green nasal discharge, and fever (higher than 100.4°F or 38°C) is common during the first three days of the illness.
Other symptoms include a sore throat, a cough, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and a loss of appetite. The nose lining may become red and swollen, and the lymph nodes (glands) in the neck may swell slightly.
Cold symptoms are usually at their worst during the first 10 days. Some children, however, continue to have a runny nose, congestion, and a cough after 10 days. Book an appointment for cold-cough treatment in Begur at Manipal Hospitals.
