Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a routine diagnostic procedure that provides detailed images of the digestive tract and nearby organs. It is a minimally invasive method that combines endoscopy and ultrasound techniques. This test can help identify various disorders including pancreatic, esophageal, stomach, and colorectal cancers, inflammatory bowel illness, pancreatitis, gallbladder stones, gallbladder inflammatory conditions, and other factors causing stomach discomfort.
Our Gastroenterologists may advise you to undergo endoscopic ultrasonography if you have stomach discomfort that doesn’t subside on its own or irregular bowel movements, causing discomfort in everyday life.
EUS tests include two parts. The first part is an Upper Endoscopy that checks the upper side of the digestive system. It evaluates the health of the lymph system, blood arteries, cysts, and tumours, as well as the oesophagal, stomach, and small intestinal linings. A Lower EUS approach checks the lower section of your digestive tract, including the anal sphincter, blood arteries, lymphatic nodes, cysts and malignancies, and the lining of the large intestinal tract.
Procedure:
Both upper and lower endoscopic ultrasounds are outpatient procedures. Both have a similar methodology that takes around 60 minutes. During this procedure, the doctor administers an IV anaesthetic to help you calm down and sprays numbing medication into your throat. Following that, a plastic mouthguard is inserted into your mouth. The ultrasound endoscope is then put into your mouth, oesophagus, and stomach, and the doctor studies the ultrasound images to inspect the upper part of your digestive system.
Liver Scan
A liver scan is a type of imaging test used to examine the liver and assess its function. Liver ultrasounds (hepatic ultrasonography) are often used to identify liver ailments including tumours, fibroid cysts, liver abnormalities, and hepatitis. Liver ultrasonography comes in various forms.
An upper right abdominal quadrant is screened during a standard liver ultrasonography test. It comprises the right kidney, bile ducts, liver, and gallbladder. Vascular hepatic ultrasonography can be used to find blood vessels passing through the liver. This test helps identify any tumours or abnormalities in your liver, as well as chronic liver disorders at an earlier stage. This scan also evaluates the flow of blood and the functioning of organs.
Elastography ultrasound detects elasticity or fibrosis in your liver. Our gastroenterologists at Manipal Clinics, Budigere may also propose a contrast-enhanced liver ultrasound to get a clearer picture of suspected liver abnormalities. You will be advised not to eat anything for 6 to 12 hours before your liver scan test. The procedure takes about half an hour, following which the doctor will examine the images and compile a full report.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography is commonly used to identify diseases in the biliary system, including gallstones, blockages, narrowing, and inflammation of the bile ducts or pancreatic ducts. ERCP may also indicate the presence of tumors in the bile ducts or pancreas. From removing gallstones to opening narrowed ducts, placing stents, and draining fluid collections, doctors can both detect and correct the problems during an ERCP procedure. If you experience unusual abdominal pain or discomfort (or biliary colic), symptoms of blocked bile flow, or bile spillage, such as jaundice, you should undergo an ERCP procedure.
The ERCP technique combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy (moving X-rays) reveals how easily fluids flow down your bile ducts. Your doctor can further examine for leaks, stopping, and blockage of fluids in your biliary system and identify the health issue.
ERCP is carried out as an outpatient procedure. Following an ERCP, patients can leave the clinic after one hour once the anesthesia wears out. Our gastroenterologists also counsel patients on lifestyle changes to optimize the health of their digestive system.
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy test aims to detect, diagnose, and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disorders, diverticulosis, colorectal bleeding, and tumors of the colon. Benign polyps found in the colon and rectum can be removed in the same procedure. A long, flexible tube with a light and camera called a colonoscope is passed through the rectum to visualize the inner surface of the colon.
Colonoscopy is an important screening tool for colorectal cancer. It is recommended for all individuals to undergo regular colonoscopies starting at age 40-50 if they have a family history of colon cancer or other risk factors for cancers in the family.
Procedure:
To ensure a proper view of the colon, the patient is prepared with a liquid diet and laxatives before the procedure.
The patient is then positioned on their side and given sedation or general anesthesia for pain relief and relaxation.
The colonoscope is inserted into the rectum and gently guided through the entire colon length.
The colon may be inflated to improve imaging and to expand the colon.
Real-time images are captured by the camera on the colonoscope, making it easier for the physician to identify any abnormalities.
If any polyps are identified, they can be removed or biopsied during the procedure.
Management of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammation issues of the digestive tract. There are two major types of IBD - Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. With advancements in the field of gastrointestinal science, IBD can be managed with a variety of therapies that can patients relieve symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Medications act as the gold standard in dealing with mild and moderate inflammatory bowel diseases. Your doctors will prescribe you medicines based on your severity and tolerance level since these medicines can cause side effects and are not advised for long-term use. Along with medications, a healthy diet plan from a dietitian can further help in controlling the symptoms. In severe cases, our doctors may ask you to undergo surgery to remove severely damaged sections of the intestine or to treat complications of IBD.
