Different Types of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Minimally invasive techniques have caused a ripple in the medical world. With tiny incisions, people have been able to shed their apprehensions about going under the knife and are opting for timely treatment. In addition, numerous benefits such as shorter hospital stays, less pain, smaller scars, fewer chances of infections and more. At Manipal Hospital Dwarka, we have a team of highly experienced and renowned cardiac surgeons in Delhi, who are experts in performing numerous minimally invasive heart surgeries.

There are many types of minimally invasive heart surgeries performed to treat various heart diseases. The most common procedures performed via a minimally invasive technique are:

  • Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement

  • Aortic Valve Repair/Replacement

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

  • Ventricular Assist Device

  • Atrial Septal Defect

  • Tricuspid Valve Repair/Replacement

Let’s find out more about these procedures one by one.

Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement

A healthy mitral valve keep the blood moving in the right direction. If it's not functioning correctly or leaking, it may allow some blood to flow backwards, which can impact the functioning of the heart and cause many diseases. This can happen due to a misshaped or a diseased mitral valve. Through this procedure, the valve is repaired by making a small incision in the chest. The surgeon inserts the specially designed tools inside the body to remove the diseased part and reconstruct it. This restores the blood flow in one direction and you can leave the hospital with a very small scar on the body as compared to the scarring of 8 to 10 inches in the middle of the chest if the same procedure is done using conventional approach.

Aortic Valve Repair/Replacement

Aortic valve disease or aortic stenosis is a medical condition in which the aortic valve narrows and disrupts the flow of blood. This can happen due to conditions like being born with a misshaped aortic valve, damaged due to ageing (acquired aortic valve disease), or bacterial infection of the valve. To restore the blood flow the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The symptoms could be shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, swelling of the ankles, feet and legs, and fatigue. With a minimally invasive heart surgery technique, the chances of blood loss, infection, pain and scarring are less and you can recover faster.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Narrowed coronary arteries that disrupt the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscles is a medical condition called Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). The treatment done to restore the blood flow is called CABG or Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. In this procedure, a vein or artery from any other part of the body is grafted to bypass the blocked artery. One or more blocked arteries can be bypassed in one surgery. Minimally Invasive Heart Bypass Surgery in such a case is performed through small incisions or ports through which specially designed instruments are inserted in the chest.

Ventricular Assist Device

A pump called a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is inserted in the body of individuals who have developed end-stage heart failure. The LVAD is a mechanical, battery-operated pump that is surgically implanted to assist the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber, in pumping blood to the body's tissues. Blood flows from the left ventricle through an inflow tube to the pump, it then flows out through an outflow tube into the Aorta from where it flows to other parts of the body. This device is connected to a controller that is outside the body.

Atrial Septal Defect

A gap or fissure (defect) in the septum, the wall dividing the top two chambers of the heart. Due to this flaw, blood that is oxygen-rich can seep into the heart's blood chambers that are oxygen-poor. ASD is a septal defect affecting the two upper chambers of the heart. The wall separating the left and right sides of the heart is called the septum.

Tricuspid Valve Repair/Replacement

Tricuspid valve is one of the four valves that regulate blood flow through the heart is the tricuspid valve. It divides the right atrium and right ventricle, the top and lower chambers of the right heart. If the valve is weakened or infected the blood flow can be obstructed causing the heart to exert more effort to send blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. In this case, the valve can be repaired or replaced using a minimally invasive technique.
