The high prevalence of cervical cancer is an urgent call to spread awareness and provide access to treatment facilities to women all around the world. Out of all the cancers affecting women, 6-30% of cases are of cervical cancer. It comes right after breast cancer in women. The whole month of January is marked as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month by the WHO to keep people informed about the causes of cervical cancer and its treatment.
Cancer is a condition where cells keep growing in the body and spreading to other parts, causing hindrances in the body’s function. When this happens in the uterine cervix, it is called cervical cancer. Cervical cancer can affect women of any age, but it is most common in women over the age of 30. The long-lasting infection of human papillomavirus (HPV), is responsible for cervical cancer. This virus is sexually transmitted and affects half of the sexually active people at some point in their lives. Not all HPV infections lead to cervical cancer, but the risk increases rapidly. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of over 200 related viruses, many of them capable of causing different types of cancer.
Need to create awareness around cervical cancer:
People must be made aware of early detection and preventive measures as soon as possible. The most common test used for diagnosis is the Pap smear test, which is also called cervical cytology. In this test, the doctor examines and collects a sample of cells from the cervix region using a spatula or a swab. The sample is then observed by a cytologist under a microscope. A negative result means there’s no infection, whereas a positive test means the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells in the region. In the event of a positive test, another test is usually performed to rule out any errors in the diagnosis. Women over 30 years of age should undergo this test at least once every 5 years.

COVID risk on bone health: COVID primarily is a respiratory disease and affects the lungs the most. The most common symptoms of COVID, even in new mutations are cough, sore throat, fever, and shortness of breath which again directly impacts the respiratory system. But there have been reported symptoms of fatigue, joint and bone pain, and worsened symptoms after little physical or mental exertion in long COVID.
Dr. Rajeev Verma, HOD and consultant - Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka says, “There are a few reasons for this musculoskeletal pain. First, direct viral toxicity, endothelial cell damage and dysregulation of the immune response lead to exaggerated inflammation leading to muscular pain. Second, the muscular pain and long recovery time of COVID may cause stiffness and immobility in the joints that eventually end up causing joint pains.”

How sedentary lifestyle is making us vulnerable to cancer, here's what doctors say:
A sedentary lifestyle is basically a lifestyle where a person spends most of his/her time in one comfortable position and does not indulge in much physical activity. Medical experts claim that this kind of lifestyle has many sorts of health risks in general and increasing cancer cases are also reported which originate due to a sedentary lifestyle. In the past decade, the cases of obesity-related cancer have been on the rise, and sitting, reclining, and lying down for hours at stretch is a new carcinogen, according to experts.
"In the past 30–40 years, three main modifiable factors have emerged that are associated with an increased risk of cancer: physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, and overweight or obesity. The incidence of obesity-related cancers is critically affected by dietary composition, physical activity, and sedentary practices. A key and effective measure in the prevention of cancer is to reduce the exposure to modifiable causes of cancer, such as physical inactivity," says Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Surgical Oncologist, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka.

Being an infectious diseases physician, I am also concerned about communicable diseases, and infectious diseases. Though a lot of work is being done by the government sector in the field of tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and chikungunya. But I feel more budget and funds need to be allocated in this sector to enable more advancements in the medicines needed to tackle these infectious diseases. Also, there needs to be more attention given to the control and prevention of these diseases”.

ETHealthworld interacted with domain experts to understand the expectations of the healthcare industry from the Union Budget 2023-24, especially in terms of communicable diseases, and affiliated healthcare departments that need increased focus on managing and containing the spread of communicable diseases.
New Delhi: Communicable diseases pose a substantial challenge to the public health system in India. With increased public spending on healthcare more attention is the need of the hour, inform domain experts. The emergence of new COVID strains, increasing cases of measles and tuberculosis (TB), Zika virus, and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in various parts of India, highlight the need for increased budgetary spending to strengthen the healthcare industry’s response to communicable diseases. Moreover, The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s (MoHFW) goal of making India TB-free by 2025 would require additional funds to increase access to quality healthcare and advanced treatment. The Government of India (Gol) allocated Rs 72 crore to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) branches to augment disease surveillance of zoonotic diseases and other neglected tropical diseases surveillance in the Union Budget 22-23.
Communicable diseases need proper attention to strengthen the healthcare industry “We have seen how alarming the situation could be if proper attention is not given to the infectious diseases, expecting a good budget strength in the healthcare industry in response to communicable diseases,” mentioned Dr. Ankita Baidya, Senior Infectious Disease Expert, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka.

Diabetic kidney disease or commonly referred term as diabetic nephropathy is one of the long-term sequelae of diabetes.
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes over time experience serious damage to many organ systems including the heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels.
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions over the past few decades worldwide. Diabetic kidney disease or commonly referred term as diabetic nephropathy is one of the long-term sequelae of diabetes. Over 1 in 3 adults with diabetes will develop some form of diabetic kidney disease in their lifetime.
Once a patient is detected to have diabetic kidney disease, he/she should be in regular follow up with the nephrologist (kidney specialist) along with their primary physician.
The symptoms of the progression of chronic kidney disease include decreased urine output with fluid retention, swelling over the feet and face, breathlessness, anemia, and high BP recordings.
To reduce the risk of progression of diabetic nephropathy blood sugar and BP should be regularly monitored and controlled. Lifestyle modifications include exercise, adequate hydration, no smoking, and dietary restrictions like low carb and salt intake. Intake of pain medications should be only under the guidance of a nephrologist in patients with diabetic kidney disease.

Fact check: Anti-vaxxers link sudden cardiac events with COVID-19 vaccines; is there truth to it?
While playing against the Cincinnati Bengals during a Monday night football game, Buffalo Bills' defensive back Damar Hamlin suddenly collapsed on the field. Reportedly, the 24-year-old had suffered a cardiac arrest. However, moments after the incident, social media was stormed with claims that the sudden collapse was linked to COVID-19 vaccines.
Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene took to Twitter and said, "Before the covid vaccines we didn’t see athletes dropping dead on the playing field like we do now… Time to investigate the covid vaccines.”
Dr. Ankita Baidya, Consultant Infectious Disease, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka, says, "I don't see any relation between COVID vaccine and the sudden death of young people around the world. During the lockdown people had a sedentary life which actually increases the cardiac risk, the second thing is COVID itself as a virus has a chance of making blood clots. So, even if somebody doesn't remember that he has COVID because COVID is a viral infection that can also go as an asymptomatic viral infection but still it can have effects on the body."
