Conception can happen naturally for some, while for others assisted reproduction or fertility treatment is required - which involves determining the time of ovulation using a follicular scan or follicular imaging. Follicles, which are small fluid-filled sacs found inside the ovaries, secrete hormones and contain an immature egg (oocyte). During ovulation, these follicle ruptures to release a mature egg for fertilisation. A follicular scan or follicular imaging is a type of ultrasound scan that is done to identify the rupture of the follicle and release of the egg (ovulation) to greatly increase your chances of conception. Follicular imaging is recommended for women, who are not ovulating, are unsure of ovulation, have had miscarriages, and those opting for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. This is a painless procedure which involves a series of vaginal scans that is done during a menstrual cycle. The ideal time to undergo a follicle imaging or scan is between 9 - 20 days of a woman’s menstrual cycle. A small plastic probe is inserted into the vagina and pictures of the internal organs are taken for further analysis. At least 4 - 6 scans are recommended for a woman having a regular menstrual cycle. Each scan will last for about 5 - 10 minutes.
Apart from monitoring the formation of follicles inside the ovary, follicle scanning can also detect follicles that fail to grow, or those that rupture prematurely and the time of egg implantation in the uterus.
