What is Kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive method performed to treat a spinal compression fracture. It is commonly caused by osteoporosis which leads to vertebral body collapse causing severe pain and loss of mobility. During the procedure, bone cement is injected into the fractured spinal bone (vertebrae). As cement hardens, it stabilizes the fractures and supports the spine thus helps in reducing the pain and to restore mobility. What happens in the procedure?
The surgery is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure can be done under general anaesthesia or sedation only, thus the risk of general anaesthesia can be avoided. The patient is made to lie on the stomach. The surgeon will insert a hollow needle (trocar), through your skin and into the vertebra, the position is checked under an intr-operative x-ray(fluoroscopy) machine. Through the trocar, an inflatable balloon-like device is inserted into the vertebra and inflated, which opens up a space to be filled with bone cement, which hardens quickly and stabilizes the bone.
What happens after the procedure?
The patient is kept in an observation room for 1-2 hours before shifting to the hospital room. Back pain usually improves within 2-3 hours and the patient will be able to stand and walk independently and can be sent back home by the evening. One can return to normal activities, but the advice is to try to avoid hard efforts like heavy lifting for at least six weeks.
What are its advantages?
This is a low-risk procedure that has helped most of the patients to regain lost mobility.
The pain caused by the fracture is reduced right away or within a couple of days.
The vertebrae or the spinal column becomes stable.
The height of the vertebrae or the spinal column is restored.
The patients are more active and can do their routine activities without anybody’s assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is the recovery time for kyphoplasty?
Recovery after the kyphoplasty is generally faster because only a smaller incision on your back is made while performing the procedure. Post-surgery, pain relief is achieved almost immediately or within 2 days. Most people go back to their normal life without any restrictions. However, lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercising should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. Make sure to visit your doctor regularly for follow-up care.
2. What is the success rate for kyphoplasty surgery?
Kyphoplasty procedure is the treatment of choice for vertebral compression fractures. More than 90% will experience pain relief which improves mobility thus, improves functionality, and quality of life.
3. What are the side effects of kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a safe and effective procedure that helps correct spinal compression and offers pain relief. Side effects and complications associated with the procedure are rare and are estimated to be less than 4%. Some common complications of the kyphoplasty procedure include infection, bleeding, an adverse reaction to anaesthesia, persistent pain, paralysis, bone cement leakage, pulmonary embolism, and allergic reaction to the mixture of bone cement.
4. Is kyphoplasty safe for the elderly?
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure and is well-accepted for treating symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures in the elderly. The advantage of the procedure being done in sedation avoids the risk of general anesthesia especially in elderly patients with comorbidities including cardiac disease, diabetes, hypertension etc.
5. Can kyphoplasty cause more fractures?
There are long-term studies available that indicate kyphoplasty can cause more fractures. However, the candidates undergoing a kyphoplasty procedure are already suffering from osteoporosis, a condition that puts them at a higher risk of fractures. For this reason, the risk of spinal fractures post-kyphoplasty appears to be due to osteoporosis and not due to the surgical procedure.
