A Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which a hole, called a tracheostomy or tracheotomy, is created through the front of the neck and into the windpipe (trachea). This opening allows direct access to the trachea and enables breathing bypassing the mouth and nose.
1. Pre-Procedure
Before a Tracheostomy, you will have a medical evaluation discussing the reasons and risks. You will sign a consent form and may need to fast.
Address any emotional concerns with your healthcare team for support and clarity.
2. During Procedure
During the Tracheostomy procedure, anaesthesia is administered for comfort, either inducing sleep with general anaesthesia or numbing the incision site with local anaesthesia.
A small incision is made in your neck to access the trachea, through which a Tracheostomy tube is inserted to create an alternate airway.
Vital signs are closely monitored throughout by our medical team to ensure your safety.
3. Post Procedure
After the Tracheostomy procedure, you will be closely monitored in a recovery area. Discomfort at the site can be managed with prescribed pain medication.
Your breathing may feel different due to the tube, and our team will teach you breathing and coughing techniques to prevent issues.
You will receive detailed care instructions for managing the tube and stoma, including cleaning and suctioning.
Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor progress and make adjustments to your care plan.
