Balloon Dilation is also known as Balloon Valvuloplasty. This is a procedure commonly used to open blocked valves, typically of pulmonary and aortic valves. It is a minimally invasive procedure that helps to fix pulmonary valves. This is one of the safest processes, where a catheter with a deflated balloon is inserted via the groin area up to the heart. Pulmonary defects occur due to the abnormal development of the heart valve in the first two months of pregnancy. This procedure is useful for treating aortic valve stenosis. This entire procedure lasts for about six months and can be repeated when needed.
Percutaneous Valvuloplasty is a method for aortic valve treatment. It can be performed in all age groups of patients, from foetuses to old age.
A Balloon Dilation process is a Cardiac Catheterisation process. Here, a small, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel via the groyne region and guided to the inside of the heart. This tube has a deflated balloon attached to its tip. When this tube is placed in the narrowed valve, the balloon is then inflated to stretch into the open area.
This entire Balloon Dilation process takes about 30 minutes to complete under local anaesthesia.
This process decreases the symptoms for about three to twelve months.
Balloon Valvuloplasty is a non-surgical procedure for kids with narrowed heart valves or obstructed valves. For children undergoing this procedure, there are some risks: valve leakage, bleeding from the catheter site, temporary abnormal heart rhythm, infection, or even may require additional surgery. Most of the kids respond positively to this Balloon Valvuloplasty process; they recover within a few hours or a day.
Most of the kids with pulmonary valve stenosis need only one Valvuloplasty, which is about 85% of children. Around 15% of the children may need a repeat procedure within a few years. Children suffering from aortic valve stenosis will need a second procedure within the span of 8 to 10 years after their first ever procedure because this disease is different and gets worse over time.
Right after surgery, for about a few hours, you cannot eat or drink anything. After some time, you can have clear liquids such as water and soups, and you can eat foods like mashed potatoes and pudding. You need to avoid hot food.
The insertion of a catheter via the groyne region can be uncomfortable, but it should not have to be painful. This catheter that enters through your groyne can also cause abdominal cramps, which may last for a few hours. Tablets and painkiller medications can easily manage this pain.
This procedure is one of the safest processes because it helps to reduce the symptoms of aortic stenosis and improves symptoms of valve stenosis, reducing chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath.
This procedure is an advanced process of the cartilaginous eustachian tube with high safety and efficacy. Its success rate is between 65 and 87 per cent.
The long-term survival rate with valvuloplasty is abysmal, the 1-year survival rate is 55% and the 3-year survival rate is 23%
The Balloon Valvuloplasty is contraindicated if the patient is suffering from the following:
There are a variety of complications associated with Balloon Valvuloplasty. Some of the main complications are:
If the patient is pregnant, you need to ask the doctor about this because the radiation used during this process may lead to harmful birth defects.
There is also a risk of an allergic reaction to the dye used during the procedure. You must notify the doctor if you are sensitive or allergic to any medication, dye, iodine, or latex. For some patients, it is uncomfortable to lie on the table for a long time, as it causes pain.
