Obstetric Scans

Obstetric Scans, or Prenatal Ultrasound, also known as Obstetric Ultrasound, are the application of medical ultrasonography during pregnancy. Since the procedure can provide a variety of information about the mother's health, the timing…

FAQ's

A Foetal Medicine doctor takes care of a woman having a complicated and high-risk pregnancy. They also manage other health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They perform tests such as ultrasounds and also monitor the foetus's development and handle the delivery.

Foetal Medicine specialists primarily treat high-risk pregnancies. Additionally, they provide care for pregnant women with pre-existing medical conditions like HIV, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. They also have the expertise to handle pre-eclampsia, preterm births, birth defects, and multiple gestations.

You may be referred to a Foetal Medicine specialist if you had a pre-existing medical condition before pregnancy or developed any medical condition during pregnancy.

We have the necessary preparations to care for high-risk pregnancies. Immediately after the baby’s birth, our specialists will examine the baby. If the baby suffers from any ailments, the necessary interventions are provided. Our Foetal Medicine team will run a course of treatment to ensure that you and your baby are safe.

Pregnancy scans will be done by qualified obstetricians or radiologists working in the field of Foetal Medicine.

First-trimester Ultrasound

First-trimester scans screen for several chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome. The radiologist examines nuchal translucency, the presence of bone in the baby’s nose, and blood flowing through the ductus arteriosus to determine if the baby has Down syndrome or not.

Biochemical Testing

During the first trimester, additional blood tests are performed to examine pregnancy hormones in the blood. These blood tests help detect Down syndrome, trisomy 13 and 18.

Second Trimester

Maternal serum is screened to diagnose several chromosomal problems, such as Down syndrome. It also identifies the risk of neural tube defects and spina bifida. These blood tests are usually performed between 15 to 22 weeks of pregnancy.

Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scans and Anomaly Scans are baby-dependent. During an NT Scan, the thickness of fluid behind the baby’s neck is measured when the baby is in a horizontal position. Similarly, Anomaly Scans studies all the body parts of the baby to rule out abnormalities. Therefore, if the baby is in an unfavourable position, the time duration of the scan is extended necessitating multiple sittings. Sometimes, the pregnant woman might have to come on another day if the baby does not change position.

A full bladder is required only for a Foetal Viability Scan. For other pregnancy scans like NT, Anomaly and Growth Scans, your bladder must not be too full or empty.

You will need a copy of your Aadhaar card or Photo ID card, like a passport or driving licence, to undergo a pregnancy scan. These documents are mandatory as per the government's PCPNDT laws.

You can bring previous scan reports, investigations done, reports of past pregnancies, a history of medical illness, and medications.

Our team of Foetal Medicine specialists provides the necessary counselling for patients and their families. We provide the necessary information and the options you have in Foetal Medicine. This will help you to make an informed decision for yourself.
