The surgical procedure known as Wisdom Tooth Extraction also referred to as Wisdom Teeth Removal, entails the removal of a third set of molars known as "wisdom teeth." Usually, this procedure is applied when a tooth gets impacted. This means the impacted tooth doesn't have enough room or space to erupt into the oral cavity, leading to outrageous pain, inflammation, and swelling around the affected area. Wisdom Tooth Extraction is usually done as an outpatient surgery under local anaesthesia. If the patient is intransigent, then general anaesthesia may be administered. In a hospital, a licensed dentist or surgeon can handle Wisdom Tooth Extractions. Your dentist will use an X-ray of your mouth to determine if you need to have your wisdom teeth removed and, if necessary, to select the best candidate for the procedure. Once the extraction is done, individuals can resume their normal activities within one or two days, but full recovery may take up to six weeks. Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria, has an experienced team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and dental professionals proficient in performing such dental procedures with precision.
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the back of your mouth and can be observed on X-rays. They tend to emerge during the period of 17 to 25 years old. The main reason for their extraction is usually due to individual needs.
It impacts them in some way: Due to their positioning towards the back of the mouth, the wisdom teeth may not emerge expectedly, causing discomfort if they become stuck in the gums or jawbone.
Their angle of eruption might be wrong: They could come into contact with your other teeth, disturb the alignment, and cause pain.
Your mouth isn't large enough: There isn't enough space in your jaw for more molars to erupt, causing pain.
You are either suffering from gum disease or cavities: Your wisdom teeth can be out of reach for your toothbrush and dental floss, which leads to cavities.
Your doctor will perform the following tasks on the day of your surgery:
For your ease and to alleviate any pain in your teeth and gums, sedation can be administered by administering sedative medication if you opt for it
If required, a surgeon makes incisions (cuts) in your gums to reveal teeth that are hidden in your gums or jawbone
Then, they will lift your wisdom teeth out of their sockets with caution after loosening them. (They might need to separate your tooth into smaller pieces to make removal easier)
Will ensure that the area is free from infections by thoroughly sterilising the operating field
If stitches are needed, the surgical area should be closed using staples or absorbable sutures
To prevent further bleeding, may apply gauze to the sockets
Pericoronitis is a common reason for urgent removal of a wisdom tooth, often occurring due to limited space in the lower jaw. Symptoms of infection include inflamed and swollen gum tissue behind the last visible molar. Unpleasant taste or odour, pain when biting with the back teeth, and sometimes a discharge of pus from the affected area. In some cases, the infection can cause swelling in the gum tissue, cheek, or other nearby areas of the jaw, resulting in pressure and causing severe ear pain. If there is any concern about infection, it is essential to seek a medical assessment, as ear or sinus infections can also cause tooth pain.
Dangers and complications of Wisdom Tooth Extraction Surgery include:
Haemorrhage: Although there may be some bleeding during the procedure, it typically subsides quickly and should not pose any issues if the incision is closed. Once you are home, you can usually control the bleeding by applying pressure with a cotton ball for at least 10 minutes. If the bleeding persists, please contact our surgeon for further assistance.
Nerve injury: The roots of your lower wisdom teeth are situated close to the nerves. One of these nerves provides sensation to your lower lip, chin, and lower teeth, while the other contributes to your sense of taste and provides feeling to your tongue. During surgery, there may be some sort of injury to the underlying nerves.
Infection: Despite the small chance of infection, it is still quite rare.
A dry socket can occur when the blood clot at the surgery site becomes dislodged. Indications of a dry socket include pain, foul breath, and a disagreeable taste in the mouth. It is important to contact our oral surgeon immediately if you suspect you have a dry socket. The healing process for a dry socket may take a few additional days, but the pain can be reduced with proper medication and guidelines.
After your treatment, using an ice pack on your cheek for a few days can help reduce swelling. During this time, it is recommended to avoid smoking, hot drinks, and fruit juices, as they may impede the healing process. Instead, choose warm chamomile tea or plain water. Foods that are difficult to eat can also be problematic, so it is best to stick to easily chewable options such as mashed potatoes, fish, spaghetti, and lukewarm soups. It is also important to avoid physically demanding activities like sports or sauna visits in the days following a tooth extraction, even if you are feeling better.
Typically, it takes one to two weeks to fully recover from a Wisdom Tooth Extraction. However, many individuals can resume their normal routines, including work and school, within three to five days. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions for postoperative care to help make your healing process as comfortable as possible.
