Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure to diagnose and treat joint problems. A surgeon inserts a narrow tube with a fibre-optic video camera through a small incision and views the clear image on the monitor. The defected joints analysed are repaired through pencil-thin instruments inserted through incisions.

When is arthroscopy used?

Arthroscopy is preferred as an alternative to open surgeries for minor cases. This technique clarifies unanswered questions about your bone condition through x-ray and other imaging techniques.

What are the risks involved in arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is very safe, and the complications are rare. Some people may observe:

  • Tissue or nerve damage

  • Blood clots

  • Infection

  • Breathing difficulty due to anaesthesia.

How to prepare for arthroscopy?

  • Your doctor may suggest you avoid solid food eight hours before surgery.

  • Avoid medications that increase bleeding. Inform your doctor about your health conditions and ongoing medications before undergoing this procedure.

  • Wear loose clothes to avoid difficulty in dressing post-surgery.

What happens during arthroscopy?

You will be under anaesthesia during the procedure. The part of the body affected is placed in a positioning device to restrict the movements during the surgery. To have a clear view of the inside condition sterile saline fluid is filled to expand the area around the joints. Small incisions are made to insert the stick with the camera to view the condition. Surgical devices are inserted through incisions, and the joints are operated. Incisions will be small enough to close with two stitches or with strips of sterile adhesive tapes.

What happens after the procedure?

Arthroscopy is a minor procedure and takes around an hour. After surgery, you will rest in the recovery room for a few hours before discharge on the same day. Your doctor prescribes pain-relieving medications, physical therapy, and rehabilitation to regain the strength of your joints and muscles to relapse to normal activities. It may take around six weeks or more for complete recovery.

Consult your doctor if you develop:

  • Fever

  • Pain despite taking medication

  • Swelling and redness

  • Drainage of fluids from the incision
