Surgery for Removal of Kidney Stone

What even are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are hard, pebble-like pieces of material that form in one or both of your kidneys when high levels of certain minerals are in your urine. They vary in size and shape, and can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. Manipal Hospitals Ghaziabad has some of the best urologists for kidney surgery in NCR.

What causes Kidney Stones?

There isn't one single cause of kidney stones, but several factors can contribute to their formation. Here are some of the common causes:

  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids is a major risk factor for kidney stones. When you don't drink enough fluids, your urine becomes more concentrated, which allows minerals to crystallize and form stones.

  • Diet: A diet that is high in sodium, oxalate, and animal protein can increase your risk of kidney stones.

    • Sodium: High sodium intake can increase the amount of calcium and other stone-forming minerals in your urine.

    • Oxalate: Oxalate is a substance found in many foods, including spinach, nuts, and beets. If you are prone to kidney stones, you may want to limit your intake of oxalate-rich foods.

    • Animal protein: A diet that is high in animal protein can increase your uric acid levels, which can contribute to the formation of uric acid stones.

  • Certain medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, gout, and hyperparathyroidism, can increase your risk of kidney stones.

  • Family history: If you have a family history of kidney stones, you are more likely to develop them yourself.

  • Medications: Certain medications, such as diuretics and some vitamins, can increase your risk of kidney stones.

Here are some additional factors that may play a role in kidney stone formation:

  • Obesity: People who are obese are more likely to develop kidney stones than those who are a healthy weight.

  • Inactivity: Being inactive can increase your risk of kidney stones.

  • Surgery: Certain types of surgery, such as gastric bypass surgery, can increase your risk of kidney stones.

Is surgery the only way out?

Not everyone with kidney stones needs surgery.  In fact, many small stones (less than 4 mm) can pass on their own with conservative management, which includes:

  • Pain medication

  • Increased fluids

  • Medications to relax the ureter

However, surgery may be necessary for kidney stone removal if:

  • The stone is large (greater than 7 mm).

  • The stone is causing intractable pain.

  • The stone is blocking the flow of urine from the kidney,

  • You have a single functioning kidney and the stone is blocking it,

  • You have an infection along with the stone

There are three main types of surgery for removing kidney stones:

  • Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL): This is the most common type of kidney stone operation for kidney stones. During SWL, sound waves are used to break the stone into small pieces that can then pass out in your urine.

  • Ureteroscopy (URS): This procedure is used to remove stones that are located in the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. During URS, a thin, lighted tube is inserted through the urethra (the opening at the end of the penis) and bladder up into the ureter. A laser or other tool can then be used to break up the stone or remove it whole.

  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL): This procedure is used to remove large or complex stones that cannot be treated with SWL or URS. During PCNL, a small incision is made in your back and a tube is inserted into your kidney. A laser or other tool can then be used to break up the stone or remove it whole.
