Laparoscopic Hernioplasty Procedure in Ghaziabad

Broadly termed as hernia repair, hernioplasty is a surgical procedure that treats different types of hernia, especially inguinal hernia, by pushing the organs back to their original position and adding a synthetic meshwork or patch to act as support. Herniorrhaphy involves returning the displaced tissues to their proper position. Hernioplasty is a type of hernia repair surgery where a mesh patch is sewn over the weakened region of tissue. Inguinal hernia repairs are one of the most common general surgical operations performed in the world. Diagnosis of inguinal hernias is typically performed using a thorough history, and physical and is generally signified by a bulge in the groin region, the abdomen or rarely near the spinal column if there is a disc-related hernial growth.

Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

When a hernia repair procedure is performed using minimally invasive procedure tools such as a laparoscope and or endoscope, we call it Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery. A thin tube-like structure is guided through a small incision in the abdomen, to the surgery site. A camera is mounted at the front of this thin tube, and the images are relayed to a computer screen where the surgeon controls and guides all of these tools. The site is operated upon and the outgrowth is pushed back into its natural position. During surgery, the hernia mesh may be placed across the damaged area in the affected region or where the hernia is -  such as the upper stomach, abdomen or groin and attached with sutures. The procedure is minimally invasive and has a short hospitalization time compared to conventional surgical procedures.

Hernia mesh, or surgical mesh, is a medically approved mesh-like structure made from medical grade material, used to support damaged tissue around a hernia while it heals.

Evaluation for Surgery

Whether you need to undergo laparoscopic hernioplasty is a decision you should make after proper consultation with your healthcare provider or doctor. Your general surgeons would recommend physical examinations and tests to ensure the site and size of the hernia. Only after thorough testing, they would then discuss the best possible route of treatment with you.

You may be asked to cough, bend, push, or lift. The hernia may get bigger when you do this.

The hernia may not be easily seen in infants and children, except when the child is crying or coughing.

Ultrasound or CT scan may be done to look for a hernia.

If there is a blockage in the bowel motion, an x-ray of the abdomen will likely be done. Some of the tests below are usually recommended by the doctor before

  • X-rays

Plain X-rays don't detect herniated disks, but they can rule out other causes of back pain, such as an infection, tumour, spinal alignment issues or a broken bone.

  • CT scan

A CT scanner takes a series of X-rays from different directions and then combines them to create cross-sectional images of the spinal column and the structures around it.

  • MRI

Radio waves and a strong magnetic field are used to create images of the body's internal structures. This test can be used to confirm the location of the herniated disk and to see which nerves are affected.

  • Myelogram

A dye is injected into the spinal fluid before a CT scan is taken. This test can show pressure on the spinal cord or nerves due to multiple herniated disks or other conditions.
