Drinking alcohol moderately is not safe for health, says new analytical study
A new analysis of more than 40 years of research has found even moderate alcohol consumption can significantly increase the risk of premature death. The risks for women increase once they drink 25 grams of alcohol per day, which is less than two standard cocktails and risks for men increase at 45 grams of alcohol a day. Recent studies have found even moderate consumption of alcohol may cause cancers of the breast, oesophagus and head and neck, high blood pressure and a serious heart arrhythmia called atrial fibrillation. The risks and benefits of alcohol consumption can vary depending on individual factors such as age, sex, overall health status and genetics. According to Dr Sunil Kumar, Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, doctors never suggest any form of drinking. The doctors wind down patients who are consuming alcohol and follow the US guidelines. Women should not have more than one drink per day, and males should not have more than two drinks per day.

Manipal Hospitals' doctors have emphasised the signs of multiple myeloma. Myeloma is a kind of malignancy that affects plasma cells, which includes anaemia, bone discomfort, and decreased renal function. The doctors also used the occasion to debunk widespread misconceptions about the illness and iterated that a cancer diagnosis does not always spell death. Patients with multiple myeloma must undergo routine follow-up treatment since it is a malignancy that develops slowly and can be identified in one to three days. Many young individuals require bone marrow transplantation as part of their treatment. Nonetheless, multiple myeloma cannot be avoided by changing one's lifestyle.

Ed Sheeran, the English singer-songwriter, recently shared that his wife Cherry was diagnosed with a tumour during her second pregnancy. Dr. Shafalika SB, consultant, minimally invasive gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, mentioned that both benign or malignant tumours could develop during pregnancies, although it is a rare occurrence. Dr. Shafalika said these tumours sometimes cause abdominal pain when complications like degenerative changes in fibroids and torsions in ovarian tumours occur. If a cancerous tumour develops during pregnancy and is in the initial stages, the woman is allowed to complete the pregnancy and then treated immediately after. In case it has reached a later stage, it is advisable to terminate the pregnancy and start treatment. One of the major causes of these tumours is predisposing genetic factors aggravated by hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Cervical cancer awareness month: HPV vaccines provides 100% protection if taken prior to first sexual exposure
HPV infection is the primary cause of cervical cancer in 99% of cases, and this is the only vaccine that is available for preventing cervical cancer.
HPV is a type of virus that is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. There are two kinds of HPV infections; one is a high-risk HPV, and the other is a low-risk HPV. Whenever there is a persistent high-risk HPV infection, there is a higher risk of developing cervical cancer in women. Hence, it is important to understand the importance of knowing about HPV infection and creating awareness about that as well.
It is a common infection that a woman can contract at any time in her life, but her body has natural immunity to combat the virus. So, when HPV enters a woman’s body, the body naturally fights the virus and protects it from infection. When antibodies are produced against any infection, they are not permanent; hence, the woman may be susceptible to another type of infection. Whenever we take the vaccine, the antibodies produced by the vaccine are more long-lasting, and that is how they prevent further infection as well as cervical cancer. Hence, it is commonly considered as the best preventive measure. Aside from that, using a barrier contraception such as a condom during intercourse is also advised.
