In a pursuit to spread awareness about kidney health on World Kidney Day, notable Manipal Hospitals Hebbal and Yashwantpur faculty members shared their experiences.
Dr. Girish NS, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Manipal Hospitals Hebbal, emphasised the importance of nutrition during dialysis. The dietary intake requirements vary from person to person, depending on the severity of the kidney disease.
Dr. Deepak Kumar Chitralli, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Manipal Hospitals Yeshwanthpur, talked about the role of hypertension in renal failure and how these are interlinked. High blood pressure can rupture small blood vessels in the kidneys, leading to renal failure if there’s no early intervention.

Dr. Shafalika SB On Ed Sheeran Says Wife Cherry Developed Tumour In Pregnancy | know How And Why They Occur | The Indian Express
Ed Sheeran, the English singer-songwriter, recently shared that his wife Cherry was diagnosed with a tumour during her second pregnancy. Dr. Shafalika SB, consultant, minimally invasive gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, mentioned that both benign or malignant tumours could develop during pregnancies, although it is a rare occurrence. Dr. Shafalika said these tumours sometimes cause abdominal pain when complications like degenerative changes in fibroids and torsions in ovarian tumours occur. If a cancerous tumour develops during pregnancy and is in the initial stages, the woman is allowed to complete the pregnancy and then treated immediately after. In case it has reached a later stage, it is advisable to terminate the pregnancy and start treatment. One of the major causes of these tumours is predisposing genetic factors aggravated by hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Cervical cancer awareness month: HPV vaccines provides 100% protection if taken prior to first sexual exposure
HPV infection is the primary cause of cervical cancer in 99% of cases, and this is the only vaccine that is available for preventing cervical cancer.
HPV is a type of virus that is mainly transmitted through sexual contact. There are two kinds of HPV infections; one is a high-risk HPV, and the other is a low-risk HPV. Whenever there is a persistent high-risk HPV infection, there is a higher risk of developing cervical cancer in women. Hence, it is important to understand the importance of knowing about HPV infection and creating awareness about that as well.
It is a common infection that a woman can contract at any time in her life, but her body has natural immunity to combat the virus. So, when HPV enters a woman’s body, the body naturally fights the virus and protects it from infection. When antibodies are produced against any infection, they are not permanent; hence, the woman may be susceptible to another type of infection. Whenever we take the vaccine, the antibodies produced by the vaccine are more long-lasting, and that is how they prevent further infection as well as cervical cancer. Hence, it is commonly considered as the best preventive measure. Aside from that, using a barrier contraception such as a condom during intercourse is also advised.
