Valvuloplasty

Valvuloplasty treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore

It is a procedure to repair a heart valve with a narrow opening. The aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary valves open and close to allow blood flow are the four primary heart valves. The flaps in a narrowed heart valve will become thick, stiff or fuse together, and the blood flow is decreased, referred to as valve stenosis. Valvuloplasty enhances blood flow, lessens the signs and symptoms of heart disease, and lessens breathlessness and chest pain. Other names include percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty, balloon valvotomy, and balloon valvuloplasty.

Valvuloplasty helps to regulate the blood flow and assists the heart in working efficiently. This procedure helps to postpone or even avoid the replacement of a narrowed valve. It is a minimally invasive procedure in comparison to open-heart surgery. However, valvuloplasty is not an alternative to surgery, and a cardiologist or medical expert will be the best person to suggest if it is the best line of treatment.

Preparing for valvuloplasty

The doctor will give detailed instructions to prepare for the procedure. The patient will be required to fast (no food or drinks) the night before the procedure. The doctor may advise stopping taking anticoagulants (blood-thinning medications) for a short period.  The doctor will also stop any existing medication to make sure that it does not interfere with the surgical procedure.

On the day of the procedure, the patient will be required to remove any metal from the body, like jewellery or metal objects. The patient will be given sedatives (anaesthesia) to relax before the procedure. The procedure is generally done when the patient is awake, and it is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require the patient to be given general anaesthesia.

Procedure

Valvuloplasty is usually done when one is awake and in the hospital. It is done during a procedure called cardiac catheterisation. The cardiologist will insert a thin, soft tube called the catheter with a balloon at the tip into the blood vessel. It is usually inserted in the groin. Once it reaches the right position, the balloon is inflated to widen the valve to improve blood flow. The balloon is deflated, and the catheter is removed along with the balloon.

Once the procedure is completed, the patient may be required to stay overnight at the hospital as they may need to be monitored. Imaging tests and regular health check-ups will be necessary to see if the heart valve is functioning correctly.

Valvuloplasty treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore may improve the flow of blood to the heart and reduce symptoms. If the valve narrows again, the doctor may look into further procedures like valve repair or replacement.

Recovery time

The recovery time depends on several factors and overall health conditions, including the condition of the heart. The doctors generally suggest avoiding strenuous activities like running, swimming, and jogging for about a week or more. Doctors will advise when you can return to work and be involved in physical activity. It could take up to eight to ten weeks to return to normal activities.
