Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (PAPVC) Repair

Partial Anamalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (PAPVC) Repair Treatment in Hebbal

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) repair is a surgical procedure used to correct a congenital heart defect. The defect occurs when one or more of the pulmonary veins, which bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart, are abnormally connected to the right side of the heart. This can cause the heart to work harder than normal to pump blood and can lead to complications such as congestive heart failure or arrhythmia. The repair involves connecting the affected pulmonary veins to the left atrium of the heart. This allows the oxygen-rich blood to flow properly from the lungs to the left side of the heart.

Pre-procedure
Pre-procedure for Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) repair is a specialised medical procedure that is used to correct abnormal connections between the pulmonary veins and the right atrium in the heart. This procedure is necessary to correct a congenital heart defect and is typically performed on infants or young children.

Before the procedure, the child will be admitted to the hospital and will receive a comprehensive physical examination and any necessary diagnostic tests. These tests may include an echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, or MRI. The results of these tests will be evaluated to determine the exact nature of the defect and the best approach for repair.

The patient may also need to be on medication before the procedure to control any underlying conditions or to reduce the risk of complications during or after the procedure. The patient may need to fast for a period of time prior to the procedure, depending on the type of anaesthesia used.

Procedure
The procedure is usually performed through a median sternotomy, which is an incision made in the sternum or breastbone. The surgeon will then expose the heart and the pulmonary veins and use a variety of techniques to close the abnormal connection. Sutures, staples or a patch may be used depending on the type and size of the defect. The patch is often made of synthetic material and serves to cover the abnormal opening and strengthen the normal connection between the pulmonary veins and the left atrium.

Once the abnormal connection is closed, the patient's heart is tested to ensure that the repair is successful. The patient will then be taken off the bypass machine, and the incision will be closed.

Post-procedure
Immediately after the surgery, the patient will be monitored closely in an intensive care unit. During this time, the patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, will be monitored to ensure that the patient's condition is stable. Additionally, the patient will be closely monitored for signs of infection and any other potential complications.

Once the patient has stabilised, they will be transferred to a step-down unit. During this time, the patient will continue to be monitored and receive medications, such as antibiotics and pain relievers, as necessary. The patient's diet will also be adjusted during this time.

Once the patient is able to walk and eat without difficulty, they will be transferred to a regular hospital room. During this time, the patient will continue to receive medications, attend physical and occupational therapy, and rest in order to aid in the recovery process. The patient will also be monitored for signs of infection and any other potential complications.

Finally, the patient will be discharged from the hospital when they are able to walk, eat, and perform basic activities on their own. Before the patient is discharged, they will receive instructions on how to care for themselves at home, including what medications to take, how to perform physical therapy exercises, and when to follow up with the doctor.
