Fetal Echo Studies

Treatment for Foetal Echo studies in Hebbal, Bangalore

Foetal Echo treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is an ultrasound technique to visualise a foetus's heart. It can detect various congenital heart defects, including ventricular septal defects, atrial septal defects, and patent ductus arteriosus. Fetal echocardiography is generally performed during the second trimester of pregnancy when the fetal heart is large enough to be visualised on ultrasound. Fetal echocardiography is a safe and non-invasive technique with no known risks to the mother or fetus. It is generally well tolerated by pregnant women and does not require special preparation. Fetal echocardiography can be performed as a standalone test or as part of a fetal anatomy scan. A fetal anatomy scan is a more comprehensive ultrasound scan that assesses the fetus for various anatomical abnormalities, including congenital heart defects. Fetal echo studies are an essential part of prenatal care and can help to detect serious health problems in the baby. You should speak to your doctor or midwife if you have any concerns about your baby's health.

Pre-Procedure

Preparation for a fetal echocardiogram generally requires no special preparation. The mother will be asked to lie on her back on an examination table. A small amount of gel will be placed on her abdomen, and a hand-held transducer will be used to produce the ultrasound images. The procedure is usually performed in the second trimester of pregnancy but may be performed earlier if there is a reason to suspect a cardiac problem. Fetal echocardiography is a painless procedure with no known risks to the mother or the baby.

Procedure

A fetal echocardiogram (echo) aims to assess the structure and function of the fetal heart. This test is performed to evaluate congenital heart disease, which is present in about 1% of all pregnancies. A fetal echo is typically performed during the second trimester of pregnancy, between 18 and 24 weeks gestation. The test takes 30-60 minutes to complete. The mother will lie on her back on an exam table, exposing her abdomen. A clear jelly will be applied to the skin to help obtain good ultrasound images. A hand-held transducer will be used to obtain images of the fetal heart. The fetal echo will assess the four heart chambers, valves, and great vessels. Doppler imaging will be used to evaluate blood flow through the heart. After the fetal echo is completed, the images will be interpreted by a pediatric cardiologist. The results of the fetal echo will be discussed with the parents.

Post-Procedure

After the fetal echocardiogram is complete, the transducer is removed, and the gel is wiped off. The mother may then get off the table and get dressed. The technologist will review the images with the doctor, who will discuss the findings with the parents. The entire procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes. You will then be able to get dressed and be on your way. Your fetal medicine specialists will review your fetal echocardiogram results at your next appointment at Manipal Hospitals.
