Balloon enteroscopy treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat minor intestine diseases. This procedure allows for direct visualisation of the small bowel and biopsy samples that can be obtained to determine if any abnormal tissue is present.
Balloon enteroscopy is used to evaluate several different conditions, including,
-Acute appendicitis
-Chronic intestinal obstruction, such as adhesions or hernias
-Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
Balloon enteroscopy is performed under general anaesthesia or conscious sedation. The patient is placed on their left side, and a flexible endoscope (a thin tube with a light and camera at the tip) is inserted through the mouth and into the stomach. The endoscope is then passed through the stomach and into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).
Once in place, a balloon-tipped catheter is fed through the endoscope into the duodenum. The balloon is inflated with air until it reaches its maximum diameter and blocks off all blood flow to this portion of the intestine.
This allows for direct visualisation of this portion of the bowel, which would typically be obscured by blood flow. The surgeon can then perform biopsies or other procedures on this section of the bowel without having to perform surgery that would require an incision into open tissue.
The balloons can be inflated to different sizes depending on the portion of the bowel that needs to be blocked off. This allows for a broader range of procedures to be performed using this technique.
Once the procedure is complete, the balloon is deflated and removed from the endoscope. The endoscope is withdrawn from the patient’s body, and the duodenum returns to normal.
Types
There are mainly two types of balloon enteroscopy. The two types of procedures are as follows,
Single balloon enteroscopy-
With the help of an overture/balloon system, a small camera (flexible endoscope) is introduced down the throat to examine the lining of the oesophagus, stomach, and deep small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) during a single balloon-aided enteroscopy (SBE) (see image). An inflatable balloon that can be inflated and deflated is attached to the overture's tip. The overture is secured within the gut using the balloon, which is then inflated. The endoscope can be inserted further into the small intestine while anchoring the overture. To facilitate the passage of the inner endoscope, the overture can be removed, shortening and straightening the small intestine.
Double balloon enteroscopy-
A specific device consisting of two tubes through the mouth or rectum is put into the small intestine. A balloon at the end of the inside tube, an endoscope with a light and lens for viewing, is inflated to maintain the endoscope in position as it is passed through a section of the small intestine. The outer tube is then advanced into the small intestine to the endoscope's tip, where a balloon is inflated to maintain its position. The endoscope is then run through the subsequent section of the small intestine once the balloon at its tip is deflated.
