Tumours

Malignant or benign tumours can both occur in the body (cancerous). It is typical for benign tumours to grow slowly and not spread. Malignant tumours can spread throughout the body, grow quickly, infiltrate neighbouring normal tissues, and do significant damage.

The "primary tumour" is the original tumour, and its cells can start the growth of new tumours in other organs as they circulate throughout the body. "Secondary tumours" are the name for these brand-new tumours.

Secondary tumours are created when malignant cells spread through the lymphatic or circulatory systems. A network of tiny vessels called the lymphatic system is responsible for collecting waste from cells, transporting it into larger vessels, and then directing it to lymph nodes. Eventually, lymph fluid enters the circulation.

The most common reasons for having a liver operation

  • Liver cancer (malignant) - this can be either primary cancer (initiated within the liver tissue) or secondary to another cancer elsewhere in the body that has spread to the liver.

  • Liver abscesses - an accumulation of pus within an area of swollen tissue; these are usually caused by bacterial infections but may also result from fungal infections or parasites such as Schistosoma mansoni (a type of worm infection).

  • Cirrhosis - scarring of the liver due to chronic liver diseases such as alcoholic cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis B or C virus infection, Wilson's disease and autoimmune hepatitis; this may require transplantation if other treatments fail or are unsuitable

  • Chronic active hepatitis - inflammation of the liver that lasts for at least six months and does not improve with therapy; this may lead to cirrhosis.

  • Hepatitis - inflammation of the liver caused by infections such as hepatitis A, B or C virus; it can also be caused by excessive alcohol consumption and some medications.

  • Hepatitis A - an acute liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus, usually spread by contaminated food or water. This type of hepatitis does not cause long-term liver damage; most people recover completely.
