Therapeutic endoscopy is a procedure in which an endoscope is used to treat gastrointestinal tract diseases. It can be done in an outpatient setting or as a part of a hospital stay.
Endoscopy is a procedure that uses an instrument called an endoscope to examine the inside of a body cavity or organ. Endoscopy may be done to diagnose diseases or conditions, to perform surgery, or as a preventative measure.
Usage
Endoscopy can examine the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, reproductive organs, lungs and heart. It is also used as a treatment method for certain diseases.
The procedure is performed by an endoscopist (a surgeon specialising in using tiny instruments to examine and treat problems inside the body). During the procedure:
The patient lies on their back while the doctor inserts the scope through the mouth, down into the oesophagus, stomach and intestines. The scope contains a light source, camera and small tools that can be used to remove tissue samples or deliver medication.
Clips may be placed around abnormal tissue during the procedure to cut off the blood supply before it's removed with forceps or other tools. A pathologist then examines the tissue sample under a microscope to see if it's cancerous or precancerous.
Procedure
Typically, a therapeutic endoscopy lasts for around 30 minutes. Here, sedatives help you unwind, or local anaesthetic spray is used to numb the back of your throat throughout the process. Your teeth will be shielded by a tiny mouth guard inserted between them.
Your doctor will insert an endoscope, a flexible tube, into your stomach and the back of your throat. Swallows may guide the tube, and they'll be able to deal with issues. You could feel like you're about to gag.
To aid with your treatment, your consultant will also be able to take pictures and do biopsies. Your expert will carefully remove the endoscope once the procedure is finished.
Post-therapeutic endoscopic recovery
If a sedative is administered, recovery usually takes an hour or so. You might feel bloated for a few hours, but this will pass. You can drink and normally eat once the local anaesthetic at the back of your throat wears off.
After the surgery, you can experience a painful throat, dry mouth, and mild hoarseness. These symptoms can be relieved with throat lozenges and saltwater gargles.
The technique is not painful. Most people are sensitive to the camera moving down their throat; therefore, tiny sedative injection and an anaesthetic throat spray can make the examination much more bearable.
Results
If the doctor removes a tissue sample, it will be sent to a lab where it’s checked under a microscope. The sample is also tested for cancer cells and other abnormalities.
If the doctor finds any abnormal tissue, they will remove some of your stomachs with a surgical procedure called an esophagogastrostomy. This is usually done using laparoscopic surgery, which means several small incisions will be made in your abdomen so tiny video cameras and tools can be inserted through them.
