Trans-arterial chemotherapy treatment in Bangalore(TACT)

Trans-arterial chemotherapy treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore is a procedure used to treat cancer that involves injecting anti-cancer drugs directly into the artery that supplies blood to the tumour. It's an alternative to traditional chemotherapy, which uses an intravenous (IV) line or catheter placed in a peripheral vein.

TACT is performed through a catheter inserted into the femoral artery located in the groin. The surgeon may also use this procedure to inject embolisation coils, which block blood flow to the tumour.

TACT is performed by a specially trained interventional radiologist who has undergone extensive training in radiology and oncology. The procedure can be used to treat many types of cancer, including tumours in the lungs, breast, prostate and brain.

This procedure can be performed in a doctor's office with local anaesthesia or an outpatient surgical centre under general anaesthesia. The radiologist will first make a small incision in the groin area and then thread a catheter through the artery that supplies blood to your tumour. The catheter is incorporated into your artery up to the point where it meets the tumour.

Why is trans-arterial chemotherapy performed?

Trans-arterial chemotherapy delivers high doses of chemotherapy directly into the bloodstream before it enters the heart. This allows for more precise control over drug delivery than traditional methods such as IV delivery or catheter placement into prominent veins near tumours.

This is because the chemotherapy can be delivered directly to the tumour, avoiding healthy tissue. Trans-arterial chemotherapy is often used with other types of treatment, such as surgery or radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy drugs given by IV infusion don't always reach their targets because the surrounding tissue dilutes them as they flow through small veins toward larger arteries. When this happens, less of the drug reaches its intended target — leaving some cancer cells alive and well within an otherwise "dead" tumour mass. In addition, because these treatments cannot reach all parts of the tumour, some cancer cells may survive treatment and continue to grow. This can lead to a recurrence of the disease even after treatment has ended.

A new approach to treating cancer could eliminate the need for expensive and invasive treatments while improving overall survival rates.
