The term pneumothorax refers to a collapsed lung. In case of a pneumothorax, there is a leak of air between the lungs and the wall of your chest. It is caused by a strong external pressure pushing the lung outside, which causes it to collapse. There are two types of pneumothorax: those that collapse the whole lung or those that collapse only a part of the lung.
There are many other factors that can contribute to the development of a pneumothorax, a chest injury, surgical procedures, and lung diseases. Certain circumstances may lead to the occurrence of this condition for no apparent reason. In most cases, the symptoms of shortness of breath and sudden discomfort in the chest are the most common. The collapse of a lung can, in rare circumstances, result in a life-threatening situation for the individual. A needle or chest tube is usually inserted between the ribs in order to expel excess air from the lungs. A small pneumothorax, however, may heal on its own if it is left alone for a short period of time.
There is intercostal drainage treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore available, including observation, needle aspiration, and insertion of a chest tube, nonsurgical repair, or surgery. Supplemental oxygen therapy may be prescribed to assist in the absorption of air and expansion of the lungs.
If only a small portion of your lung has collapsed, your doctor may choose to monitor your condition through chest X-rays until the excess air has been absorbed and your lung has re-expanded. It may be necessary to complete this process over a period of several weeks. Book an appointment at Manipal Hospitals now.
