Abscess Drainage

An abscess is the accumulation of pus under the surface of an inflamed area of the skin. Most of the time, this condition is caused by bacterial organisms. There is a minor surgical procedure in Hebbal, Bangalore called abscess drainage that is used to drain pus from a skin abscess and to begin the healing process. There are times when it is not necessary to drain smaller abscesses to get them to resolve.

How Does an Abscess Incision and Drainage Procedure Work?

There may be a need to prescribe a course of antibiotic therapy before a skin abscess drainage procedure is performed in order to treat the infection and prevent an infection elsewhere in the body from developing afterward.

In most cases, the procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure. A severe bacterial infection may require you to be admitted to a hospital for additional treatment and observation if you need to receive additional treatment and observation.

Before making an incision, your doctor will clean and sterilise the area that is affected.

A local anaesthetic will usually be sufficient to take care of most of your discomfort in most cases. Your doctor will use a needle to insert into the skin near the top of the abscess, where an incision will be made for drainage of the abscess. Local anaesthetics, lidocaine and bupivacaine are two examples.

The abscess drainage method is fairly straightforward.

  1. In order to remove the abscess, your doctor will make an incision in the numbed skin above the abscess

  2. There has been a drainage of pus from the abscess pocket

  3. As soon as the procedure is completed, the doctor will use a sterile saline solution to clean out the pocket.

  4. To absorb any additional pus that may be produced as a result of the surgery, it is left open with a dressing on top to make sure that it is completely absorbed

  5. An abscess that is deeper or larger may benefit from the placement of a gauze "wick" to maintain it open. In this way, the wound will be able to heal from the inside out, as well as aid in the absorption of pus and blood during the healing process

  6. In order to diagnose the infection, your physician may send a sample of pus to a laboratory for testing and diagnose the infection accurately
