Laparoscopic Appendectomy - Removing an inflamed appendix
Your appendix is a narrow tubular finger-shaped organ attached to the intestines on the lower right side of your abdomen. It houses bacteria. When the appendix is blocked, it becomes inflamed and results in appendicitis. A ruptured appendix can allow the bacteria to spread to the other organs posing a risk to life. Laparoscopy is the best diagnostic and surgical procedure to detect appendicitis and remove it surgically at the same time.

Why choose Manipal Hospitals
Our Centre of Excellence for Laparoscopic Services houses the latest image-guided laparoscopy instrumentation and diagnostic equipment to enable our multidisciplinary team of gastroenterologists and laparoscopy technicians to perform appendectomy on patients of all ages with equal ease.

Solutions of laparoscopic appendectomy
When your gastroenterologist suspects appendicitis, he/she will put you through a few tests to diagnose it conclusively. Depending on the severity of the inflammation, and your medical history, he may suggest laparoscopic surgery to give you the option to choose this minimally invasive surgery for safer results. This is also a two pronged advantage to probe the severity of the appendicitis, and cut it away to remove it.
During a lap appendectomy treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore, your surgeon will make a few keyhole-sized incisions in your abdomen. A small, narrow tube called a cannula will be inserted into one of the incisions to inflate your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. This gas allows the surgeon to see your appendix clearly. Once the abdomen is inflated, the laparoscope, which is a thin tube with high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the end, will be inserted through the incision. The camera will beam the images on a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see inside your abdomen and guide the instruments. When the appendix is found, it will be tied off with stiches and removed. The small incisions are then cleaned, sutured, and dressed.
Laparoscopic surgery is often the best option for the elderly and the obese. It has fewer risks than an open appendectomy procedure, and a shorter recovery time hence short hospital stay. However, if the appendix has ruptured, open surgery may be recommended.

Complexities of laparoscopic appendectomy
While there are no specific risks, there could be some discomfort or pain in the tip of your shoulder from the gas in your abdomen.

Number of cases

Infection control protocol
Although this is a minimally invasive surgery, our patients are safe from infections even during their brief hospital stay.

An appendectomy is the removal of the appendix through surgery. An appendectomy is the most common surgical procedure for appendicitis, a condition characterised by inflammation of the appendix. In view of the potential for rupture of the inflamed appendix, appendicitis is generally regarded as an urgent medical condition. It is very dangerous to have a ruptured appendix. In contrast, a normally functioning appendix does not appear to have any essential function in digestion. It is possible that if you are forced to eliminate your appendix, you will not miss it.

Before an appendectomy, what happens?

Most appendectomies will be performed within 24 hours when you are diagnosed with acute appendicitis. A vein line will be installed in your body so that antibiotics can be administered as soon as possible in order to treat your infection. Antibiotic therapy is expected to continue for one to seven days following surgery, depending on the severity of the infection. Your healthcare team may monitor your antibiotic response to determine whether surgery is necessary before proceeding.

Depending on the nature of your appendicitis, your healthcare team may need to perform additional tests, such as blood tests and imaging scans. Additionally, they will need to obtain a detailed medical history and a list of any drugs, allergies, or conditions. These and other factors will be considered when explaining the type of surgery they will perform and requesting your consent. In the eight hours preceding your surgical procedure, you will not be allowed to eat or consume any liquids; however, you will be given fluids through your IV line.

After an appendectomy, what happens?

In the case of an uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy, you may be able to return home the same day. In the first few hours after surgery at Manipal Hospitals, you will require the assistance of someone else to drive you home while the anaesthesia is wearing off. In the event of a ruptured appendix or an open surgery, you may need to remain in the hospital for a few more days. Throughout the monitoring of your condition, you have the option of receiving antibacterial medicines intravenously. It is possible that an irrigation tube still needs to be removed.

After an appendectomy, how long does it take to recover?

Depending on how complicated your appendicitis and surgery were, as well as your body's response following the surgery by the help of best doctors, recovery times may vary. Generally, pain and side effects should be minimised within a few days. You may be required to take some time off before returning to your normal activities. It usually takes six weeks for most individuals to fully recover.
