The hospital may perform a hearing test on your baby while in the hospital, and it can detect hearing loss during the first few days of a baby's life. A further test may be conducted to confirm the hearing loss.
A newborn's hearing is tested using two tests. It takes only a few minutes (about ten minutes) and is painless. It can be done while your baby sleeps. During one test, the brain is tested to see how it responds to sound. The Baby's ears are plugged with soft earphones while electrodes are placed on the baby's head to measure brain activity. The other test measures how a baby reacts to sound waves entering his ear. The response of a baby's ear is measured with a probe placed inside the ear canal when clicks or tones are played into it.
Hearing Screening For Babies,
A hearing screening should be performed on all babies no later than one month. The best thing is to screen them before they leave the hospital after birth.
It's essential to have a full hearing test done as soon as possible for babies who don't pass a hearing screening.
Hearing Screening for Children and Infants
Your child should be tested for hearing loss as soon as possible if you suspect they might have it.
When a child is two to two and a half years old, and at risk for acquired, progressive, or delayed-onset hearing loss, they should receive at least one hearing test. Hearing loss that worsens over time is called progressive hearing loss, and it is called delayed-onset hearing loss or acquired hearing loss if it develops after the baby is born. Analyse your child's hearing to find out if they are at risk.
The sooner a child gets a full hearing test, the better. A full hearing test is significant if the hearing screening doesn't pass.
Full Hearing Tests
All children who fail hearing screening should undergo a full hearing test. An audiologist, an expert in testing hearing, will conduct the full hearing test. Also, the audiologist will ask about the family history of hearing loss, ear infections, and birth history.
Audiologists can perform various tests during hearing defects treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore to determine whether a person has a hearing loss, how much it is, and what type of hearing loss it is. There is no pain or discomfort associated with the hearing tests.
An audiologist might conduct the following tests,
Auditory Brainstem Response
It is a test that checks the brain's response to sound, called the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). It is possible for the person being tested to be sound asleep during this test because it does not rely on their response behaviour.
Auditory brain research focuses solely on the inner ear, the acoustic nerve, and hearing-related brain pathways. An electrocardiogram (EKG) is done by placing electrodes around the heart and recording brain wave activity in response to sound.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
Otoacoustic Emissions is a test used to detect whether the inner ear responds to sound (OAE). Because it is not dependent on reaction behaviour, a person can be sound asleep during this exam.
