Spinal deformities surgeries in Hebbal Bangalore is performed to improve the spine's alignment and relieve pain. Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is curved to the side, and spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one vertebra slips forward over the vertebra below it. Surgery to correct these deformities may involve using metal rods, screws, and/or plates to stabilise the spine. Surgery aims to stop the deformity's progression and improve the spine's alignment. Surgery may be performed as an open procedure or a minimally invasive procedure.
Surgery for correcting spinal deformities may also involve the removal of a portion of the vertebrae to allow for realignment of the spine. This is called a vertebrectomy. In some cases, the surgeon may also need to fuse some vertebrae. This is done by placing a metal rod between the vertebrae and then attaching it to the vertebrae with screws. This helps to hold the vertebrae in place so they can heal together.
Pre Procedure
Before having surgery to correct a spinal deformity, you will likely meet with your surgeon to discuss the procedure. Your surgeon will explain the surgery's risks and benefits and answer any questions you may have. You will also likely have pre-operative testing, including blood and imaging studies. You will need to stop taking certain medications before surgery, and you will need to fast for some time before the surgery.
Procedure
For scoliosis, your surgeon may use a posterior approach, which involves making an incision in your back. Once the incision is made, your surgeon will access your spine. The surgeon will then place metal rods on either side of your spine and attach them to the vertebrae. The goal is to straighten the spine and stop the progression of the deformity. Sometimes, your surgeon may also need to fuse some of the vertebrae. This is done by placing a metal rod between the vertebrae and then attaching it to the vertebrae with screws. This helps to hold the vertebrae in place so they can heal together.
Your surgeon could employ several techniques to treat spondylolisthesis. The posterior technique, which requires a back incision, is the most typical method. Your surgeon will have access to your spine once the incision has been created. The surgeon will then place metal rods on either side of your spine and attach them to the vertebrae. The goal is to stop the forward movement of the vertebra and stabilise the spine. In some cases, your surgeon may also need to remove a portion of the vertebrae to allow for realignment of the spine. This is called a vertebrectomy.
After the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed with stitches or staples. You will then be taken to the recovery room, where you will be closely monitored. Once you are awake and stable, you will be taken to a room to continue your recovery. Most people stay in the hospital for 3-5 days after surgery.
What is post-procedure care?
After surgery to correct a spinal deformity, you will likely have some pain and discomfort. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to help you manage the pain. You will also likely have some drains placed under your incisions to help remove any excess fluid. You will need to keep the drains in for 1-2 weeks, and you will also need to wear a brace or corset for 6-12 weeks.
You must avoid strenuous activity or lift for 6-12 weeks. You will likely have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to check your progress. To ensure a successful recovery, you must keep all your follow-up appointments and follow your orthopaedic surgeon’s instructions at Manipal Hospitals.
