A tumour is an abnormal lump of cells. Different cancers occur in the body, and a solid tumour is a general term used to describe them. Solid tumours do not contain liquids or cysts; can occur in several places, such as bones, muscles, and organs. It's important to understand that not all solid tumours are cancerous; some contain no cancer cells and are benign. Tumours that contain cancer cells are called malignant.
Medically, cancers can be classified as solid tumours and blood cancers. Cancer cells in the blood don't form tumours. Solid tumours can be further divided into,
Carcinomas: tumours in the cells that line the organs called epithelial cells. These are found on the skin, glands and lining of organs.
Sarcomas: These are tumours in fat tissue, bone, blood, muscles, tendon and lymph vessels.
Common types of solid tumours in children
Here are some of the tumour types seen in children,
Neuroblastoma: cancer in the belly commonly occurs in young children.
Wilms tumour: cancer found on kidneys commonly occurs in children about 3-4 years old.
Rhabdomyosarcoma: Cancer of the skeletal muscle cells.
Retinoblastoma: Cancer that occurs in the eye, typically in babies around the age of 2.
Osteosarcoma: A type of bone cancer that occurs near the joints in teens.
Hodgkin lymphoma: cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
Germ cell tumours: Cancers in the reproductive cells.
Hepatoblastoma: A rare tumour in the liver.
When is surgery performed for solid tumours?
Surgery to remove the tumour is performed after the type of tumour is recognised through a biopsy. During a biopsy during paediatric treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore, the surgeon takes a small sample of the cellular mass for analysis. A pathologist analyzes the retrieved sample right away under a microscope to tell what kind of a tumour it is. The type of surgery to be performed is based on several factors, such as the type of tumour, its location and the extent of cancer. Generally, there are two types of surgeries performed:
Open Surgery: Open surgery is a conventional surgery where the surgeon accesses the part of the body with the tumour by making an incision.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: In minimally invasive surgery, the tumour is removed using specialised surgical tools inserted through small incisions in the body. However, these surgeries are less common for cancer patients.
What happens during surgery?
In cancer treatment, surgeries are divided according to the purpose they serve,
Primary surgery: Performed to remove some or the entire tumour at a time. The leftover tumour might be shrunk using chemotherapy.
Secondary (exploratory) surgery: During this surgery, the physicians can look into it it to see the effectiveness of the treatment. The remaining tumour might also be removed at this stage.
