If a specific surgery requires the use of anaesthesia on your child, then the paediatric anaesthesiologist will discuss the details with the parents beforehand. This way the parents can inform their child about the anaesthesia and how it feels. If your child is worried about anaesthesia, you can reassure them by being by their side always. Paediatric anaesthesia is safe for your child and will be given to your child on the day of surgery. Parents can rest assured as their child will be made comfortable and cheerful before the anaesthesia is given. Children are given their favourite play toys and stuffed animals to make them calm.
Water, Food and Medication on the Day of Anaesthesia
It is always safe to check with your paediatric anaesthesiologist regarding the specific guidelines your child has to follow. Except in the case of emergencies, children are recommended to have their stomach empty when the anaesthesia is given. An empty stomach helps to prevent nausea and vomiting in your child. However, the common recommendations regarding the intake of water, food and medication for your child are given below,
Solid food such as cereal and baby food until 8 hours before anaesthesia
Clear liquids until 2 hours before anaesthesia
However, infants younger than 1 year of age can have breast milk until 4 hours and instant baby formula until 6 hours before anaesthesia
If the specific guidelines given by your paediatric anaesthesiologist are not followed properly, the procedure might get delayed, rescheduled or cancelled. So, make sure to follow the guidelines as recommended. Parents can ask their anaesthesiologist regarding the medication of their child on the day of anaesthesia.
Before the anaesthesia is given to your child, you will meet the anaesthesia care team and they will discuss the procedure with you. They will assure that your child is made comfortable before giving the anaesthesia. They will also discuss the risks and details of your child’s medical records and also answer your concerns.
Various Anaesthesia Procedural Ways
Anaesthesia can be given in various ways and you can choose one of them to get started. Your child’s anaesthesiologist will discuss the paediatric anaesthesia treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore with the child’s parents and proceed with the most comfortable option chosen.
Anaesthesia Mask: The anaesthesia is given through the help of a mask which contains air that makes your child sleepy. Here, no pain is involved and only the mask is used. However, some of the children may not feel comfortable wearing masks. So, parents can talk with their children regarding the mask method and make them feel more assured and comfortable.
Injection: Children usually fear injection needles. But with the needle put in a muscle, the pain will be brief and the anaesthesia shot is administered within no time.
IV Injection: Through the needle put into a vein, an IV injection containing the local anaesthetic is given to your child. This process can be less painful.
After the anaesthesia is given through any of the above methods to your child, the surgery is performed by the paediatric surgeon and later the child is sent to a recovery room or ICU based on the surgery type and our child’s medical condition. If your child feels pain after gaining consciousness, pain medications are given right away. Nausea and vomiting can be the common symptoms found in most children after anaesthesia. This whole process is carried out in a comfortable and safe atmosphere for your child.
