Surgery for Malrotation and Volvulus treatment in Hebbal, Bangalore

What is it?

Intestinal Malrotation is a rare prenatal defect that involves the malformation of the intestinal tract in the baby’s abdomen. This defect doesn’t allow the baby’s intestine to form normally in the abdomen. Volvulus is the condition where there is a twisting of the intestine in the baby’s abdomen. This volvulus occurs as a result of intestinal malrotation. Volvulus usually happens after birth when the twisted intestines cause intestinal blockage. This blockage prevents the food from digesting normally. Serious effects by this blockage can cause dehydration and also stop the blood flow to the intestine resulting in severe intestinal damage.

Symptoms

Sometimes malrotation can be asymptomatic and can only be detected when the baby experiences abnormal intestinal twisting. Malrotation and volvulus symptoms usually develop in the first year in children and the first week in infants such as acute bowel obstruction. The early signs include abdominal pain and intestinal cramps. If your baby draws their legs and cries every 10 to 15 minutes, contact your paediatrician immediately. Symptoms can be different for each child. However, here are the common malrotation and volvulus symptoms,

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhoea

  • Rectal bleeding

  • Frequent vomiting that is green or yellowish green in colour

  • Swollen and firm abdomen

  • Fever

  • Lethargy

  • Poor appetite

  • Barium Enema X-ray involves injecting Barium liquid into the intestine through the anus so that the intestines show up in a clear picture on the X-ray.

  • Barium Swallow/Upper GI Test refers to the procedure where the Barium liquid is swallowed to examine any abnormalities in the baby’s intestines. The upper GI series looks at the small intestine and the lower GI series looks at the large intestine.

  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: This test is used to diagnose volvulus. Here, the lower part of the GI tract, colon, and rectum are examined.
