High Blood Pressure Management Tips: People who are suffering from blood pressure issues may find the winters challenging as the lower temperatures tend to constrict blood vessels. This causes the blood pressure to rise as the flow of blood is severely restricted. Those who already have hypertension can find it quite a challenge to manage optimal levels of blood pressure during the winter season. In colder environments, blood vessels do constrict which makes it more difficult for blood to flow as well as potentially raising blood pressure.
The body's reaction to winter's colder temperatures, which involves blood vessel constriction, is known as vasoconstriction. This natural defence mechanism aims to keep the core of the body warm. However, it might cause blood pressure to increase. Also, low physical activity and dietary changes during the winter months often result in weight gain and increased sodium intake, both of which can negatively impact blood pressure.

A neurological condition known as Barré Syndrome (GBS) occurs when an individual's immune system unintentionally targets peripheral nerves. A portion of persons who have bacterial or viral illnesses like diarrhoea, chikungunya, or COVID-19 develop GBS after the illness. The reason for this is molecular mimicry. On January 9, the first GBS patient was identified in Pune. Since then, patients have been treated in the government-run Sassoon Hospital in the city, the Kamla Nehru Hospital in Pune, and the YCM Hospital in the nearby Pimpri-Chinchwad city. The disease's arrival in India has caused widespread alertness about the symptoms and seeking medical attention at the earliest if tested positive.

Every year the 'tripledemic' of viruses triggered by flu, Covid-19, and RSV raise infections in the United States. Spread via the same route - respiratory droplets - when people cough, sneeze, or talk, the common symptoms of these infections are also similar. In winter, it's common for respiratory infections to grow as people remain indoors and that makes it easier for viruses to spread. However, this year, a couple of surprising new entrants have caused panic among people as well as health officials.

Pain is universal. It is a sensation that warns us against a potential harm to the body. However, it may be interesting to note that some people may be more likely to experience pain than others. Women, for instance, are more prone to pain conditions than men, says Dr Dipali Patel, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, who explains that certain biological factors could be to blame.
Several studies also suggest that women generally report experiencing more pain than men, with a higher prevalence of chronic pain conditions like migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and musculoskeletal pain. For those curious, here’s a detailed understanding of the same.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disease, which occurs a few weeks after a viral infection. Experts share precautions to take to stop the spread. Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome have been on the rise in the state of Maharashtra recently, with the number of patients crossing 100. Recently, a Solapur resident died from what is most likely GBS and four patients were admitted to medical centres in Nagpur, including an 8-year-old and a 40-year-old. In an attempt to placate citizens about rising cases, Maharashtra’s health minister Prakash Abitkar visited Pune over the weekend. He said around 80% of infected patients are from the same area and “it's likely that polluted water is the cause of the outbreak”. He added that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been taking steps to address the issue by plugging 12 leaks, replacing a drainage line and making arrangements for ventilators and medicines.

An angioplasty is a medical procedure that is conducted to open blocked or narrowed blood vessels in the heart. The procedure of an angioplasty usually takes around 30 to 90 minutes. Patients are made to lie down on their back on a table and an IV line is started in their arm or hand. After this, a thin tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel, which is usually in the wrist or the groin, and guided to the blocked artery. The thin guidewire is then placed into the blocked vessel. A tiny balloon on the catheter is inflated at the blockage site to open the vessel and a stent may be placed to keep it open. For patients who are preparing to undergo an angioplasty, it is important to know and be aware of how to prepare for the procedure.

An ACL injury occurs when the ACL suffers a partial or complete tear during an activity. Surgery can help manage long-term damage; however, there are many guidelines to follow to speed up recovery. If you are a sports enthusiast, particularly a footballer or a gymnast, you're likely to have heard about an ACL injury. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a ligament in the knee that connects the thighbone to the shinbone. An ACL injury occurs when the ACL accidentally gets stretched and torn partially or completely, leading to pain, swelling, and restrictive movements. While not all ACL injuries require surgery, factors like the patient's age, the severity of the tear, and their activity level are key in determining the best course of treatment. But the quest to recover does not end here. If, in case, a patient needs to undergo surgery, a lot needs to be taken care of to speed up the recovery. Here's everything you need to know about the dos and don'ts before and after ACL surgery.

The human body is incredibly resilient—but it remembers what you did to it in your 20s and is now out for revenge in your 30s. A forgotten blurb of internet wisdom, once bouncing aimlessly around my long-term memory servers, now flashes through my mind as I hunch over the sink, feeling utterly spent after my body’s fourth attempt to regurgitate its contents. Unbidden, the thought of yesterday’s late-night biryani session pops up and the bile starts stirring again. Happy 30th birthday to me, my brain chants morosely.
Having spent a lifetime feeding my body all manners of junk food at ungodly hours of the night, it is hard not to feel personally affronted by this sudden rebellion. Research promised me that I would be touching my cognitive peak in my 30s, unlocking hitherto undetected levels of contentment and making more meaningful connections. But instead of stepping into a newfound career as a chess grandmaster, all my strategic and problem-solving energies are devoted to finding the quickest route to the sink after wolfing down a sizzling plate of fried chicken post-bedtime.
