Know how your blood group might influence immunity and susceptibility to diseases, with insights from experts in both Ayurveda and modern medicine. The connection between blood type and immunity has been a subject of increasing interest in both modern science and traditional practices like Ayurveda. While science investigates how blood types might influence immune responses and disease susceptibility, Ayurveda offers insights into how an individual’s constitution—referred to as ‘Prakriti’—affects their health. Both perspectives seem to converge in suggesting that our immunity is deeply influenced by factors such as blood type, lifestyle, and balance within our bodies.

As temperatures drop, our bodies adapt in fascinating ways, some beneficial and others less so. Among these responses is vasoconstriction, a natural defence mechanism where blood vessels constrict to preserve core body heat. This process, however, comes at a price: elevated blood pressure. Reduced physical activity, weight gain from festive indulgences and a tendency toward saltier comfort foods all compound the issue. Says Dr. Pramod Bhanudas Narkhede, Consultant – Cardiology at Manipal Hospital Kharadi, Pune, “Cold temperatures can increase stress on the heart, and combined with lifestyle changes during winter, this can pose risks for those prone to hypertension.”

A new study by scientists at UTHealth Houston has discovered two important genes that could help us better understand and treat epilepsy. This discovery is a big step forward in understanding what causes epilepsy, especially in patients whose seizures don’t respond to medication. Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain and causes seizures. In the United States, around 3.4 million people have epilepsy, and about one-third of them struggle with forms of epilepsy that are hard to treat with drugs. This new research could help doctors find new ways to treat these patients more effectively.

Stroke is a life-threatening condition that happens when blood flow to the brain is slow or blocked. Worldwide, it is among the leading causes of death and disability and reportedly affects one in four adults in their lifetime. While smoking, an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and alcohol consumption are common risk factors for stroke, studies suggest women who have just given birth are also at an increased risk of stroke. To get to the bottom of this, the OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr. Dipali Patel, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, to understand why this happens and what new mothers can do to reduce stroke risk.

Heart valve surgery is a procedure to treat heart valve disease, which happens when at least one of the four heart valves is not working properly. However, many aspects of heart valve surgery may surprise a non-medical person. Read on to know what they are. A heart valve surgery fixes or replaces one or more of the four valves in your heart. Your valves, located between the heart’s chambers, keep your blood moving the right way. These act like doors that open and close with each heartbeat, letting your blood flow in and out of the chambers. When your valve works in the right way, your blood should flow through your heart in one direction each time your heart beats. A heart valve cannot repair itself and the disease would get worse with time. As the disease gets worse, you will have more symptoms, and your overall health will suffer. These changes often happen slowly, but they can also occur very quickly. "The flap-like structures called heart valves control blood flow in the heart, making sure it flows in the right direction and avoiding backflow. The heart can discover it difficult to pump blood effectively if its valves are compromised," Dr. Vikrant Khese, Visiting Consultant Cardiology, at Manipal Hospital, told Times Now.

A sedentary lifestyle is a major factor that affects your metabolism. A slower metabolism equates to fewer calories being burnt by the body and, hence, contributing to food being stored in the form of fat. Obesity happens over time when you eat more calories than the body requires. Obesity adds up to various diseases, including a high risk of diabetes, heart disease or strokes, arthritis, and certain cancers. Even losing a small percentage of the fat helps to relieve the major risk of such diseases. The gastric balloon procedure is a treatment of obesity that is temporary but helps patients lose weight by reducing the volume of the stomach. For those who are looking for efficient weight-management options without going under the knife, gastric balloons have become a very common option. Because of their excellent outcomes and minimally intrusive nature, these devices have become ever more popular.

Environmental factors like cold temperatures can also contribute to the risk, Dr Shruti Satish Vadke, Consultant—Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, tells the OnlyMyHealth team.
