Dentoalveolar Surgery addresses issues with teeth and the surrounding soft tissues. It is performed to add, reshape, or remove these tissues the hard and soft tissues supporting teeth to treat a variety of conditions. Examples include teeth extractions like wisdom teeth removal, exposure of impacted teeth, and the treatment of dental abscesses.
Tooth Extractions
After administering a local anaesthetic, an incision is made in the gum tissue, and the tooth is removed. Sometimes, a minor amount of bone removal or tooth sectioning is required to facilitate the extraction.
Impacted Teeth
Impacted teeth, especially third molars (wisdom teeth), are removed through an incision in the gums. Bone covering the tooth may be removed, and the tooth might be sectioned to aid extraction. The site is then cleaned and stitched closed.
Exposure of Impacted Teeth for Orthodontics:
An incision is made in the gums over the impacted tooth. The tooth is then exposed, and a bracket is bonded to it. A small chain attached to the bracket is used later by the orthodontist to pull the tooth into its correct position.
