Natural Remedies for Common Skin Issues

Skin is important in protecting the body against pathogens because it interacts with the environment as well as excessive water loss. Its other functions include insulation, temperature regulation, sensation, vitamin D storage and synthesis via ultraviolet (UV) action, protection of vitamin B folates, oxygen and drug absorption and water resistance. Skin that has been severely damaged will attempt to heal by forming scar tissue. It is frequently discoloured and depigmented.

Some of the common skin-related issues include psoriasis, allergies, bacterial infections, fungal infections, acne, eczema, and insect bites which can be easily treated using home remedies. If not treated, these skin issues may develop into rashes, irritation, itching and redness within the skin. These skin disorders are easily visible on any body part.

The use of natural ingredients in treating skin-related issues not only calms, hydrate, and fight inflammation, but they can also exfoliate, balance, brighten, and deliver antioxidants. The natural remedies provide moisture to dry, and broken skin. They are effective in reducing swelling by reducing inflammation and help prevent infection by protecting against harmful bacteria. Natural remedies have higher chances of curing skin-related problems while helping people manage the symptoms and prevent flares. This blog has mentioned the best natural remedies for combating skin issues.

What Works for Treating Common Skin Issues?

Some natural remedies are effective for treating skin issues which are discussed below:

  • Turmeric

  • It consists of curcumin which possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties effective in treating acne, and healing skin injuries (like sun damage) while giving a natural glow to the skin.

  • Making a paste while mixing one portion of turmeric with two portions of water is recommended. It should be stirred till it thickens and later applied to the skin.

  • Another option includes mixing one tablespoon of turmeric with one tablespoon of honey. This paste is applied to the face and left for 15 minutes.

  • Later it is rinsed and dried off.

  • Honey

  • It is known to be one of the best moisturizing agents for the skin and helps treat acne.

  • The mechanism involves the natural immune system for reducing skin inflammation and irritation and destroying the bacteria responsible for causing acne. Also, it is helpful in healing and lightening the acne scars.

  • Honey can be applied while mixing it with other ingredients. 1/3rd portion of honey can be mixed with one portion of cinnamon for treating acne.

  • It should be left to dry for at least 8-10 minutes and should be rinsed off later.

  • Another option includes mixing ½ tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of baking soda and olive oil. Baking soda helps in peeling off the dead skin and olive oil helps in providing extra moisture to the skin. This mixture should be applied for 10 minutes and then rinsed off.

  • Coconut Oil

  • It is effective in repairing the skin, providing antibacterial protection to the skin. Also, it is helpful in reducing skin inflammation as it has anti-inflammatory properties.

  • It helps in healing as it has antioxidant properties.

  • Coconut oil can be used by adding sugar, salt and baking soda in the form of a scrub.

  • It can also be used alone and left overnight.

  • Olive Oil

  • It contains vitamins E and K which help treat acne and clear the skin.

  • It can be applied directly onto the skin.

  • It can be also used by blending with other essential oils such as lavender, almond, and grapeseed oils that are mostly used for treating skin issues.

  • Aloe Vera

  • Aloe vera’s moisturising ability can be used in place of face lotion.

  • It is packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and healthy enzymes.

  • Aloe vera quickly absorbs into the skin, so even those with oily skin can use it without getting breakouts.

  • It can also be used to treat sunburn, frostbite, cuts, and cold sores.

  • Green Tea

  • Green tea has anti-ageing properties by reducing inflammation and scavenging free radicals.

  • It has anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties and natural sunscreen with photoprotective action that has a very mild and calming effect on the skin.

  • Mixing ¼ cup of witch hazel and 1/4 cup of freshly brewed green tea with ½ cup of rosewater is stored and used as a spray bottle in the refrigerator for providing a cooling effect to the skin.

  • Oats

  • Oatmeal baths can soothe red, inflamed skin, and they are frequently advised for sunburn, eczema, and poison ivy to help reduce swelling.

  • The uncooked oats are ground in powder form and this powder can be added to warm water till it gets soaked and later used for bathing.

What Does Not Work for Treating Common Skin Issues?

Home treatments are frequently promoted as being risk-free, without causing any side effects, made from natural ingredients, and loaded with skin-beauty advantages. Despite this, after utilising a safe and natural home cure, some people have occasionally complained of skin allergies, pimples, boils, etc. on their skin. Certain ingredients may cause irritation or redness due to their natural properties. It is therefore critical to avoid using those products when making face packs.

Some of the natural ingredients, such as lemon, cinnamon, and spices, can cause severe sensitivity in some people. Even milder foods can cause rashes if our skin is allergic to them. There is always the risk of irritation or allergy, no matter how natural an ingredient is.

  • One should avoid using oils that can cause pimples on the face.

  • One should avoid using fruit extracts, potato or tomato juice, or lime juice on the skin if someone has dry or flaky skin, or in case they are taking acne medication. These will dehydrate the skin and increase its sensitivity. It may even cause irritation.

  • One should avoid malai, milk, and oils on their face if they have oily skin. They will block pores and cause more whiteheads to form.

  • One should strictly avoid acidic ingredients such as vinegar, mainly for sensitive skin.
