An intra-articular injection or joint injection is used for treating inflammatory joint conditions, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis and arthritis. The procedure is also performed for removing excess fluid from the joints. Intra-articular injections alleviate pain in multiple ways. These pain relievers consist of:
Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids reduce local inflammation by inhibiting the development of inflammatory cells that are naturally produced in response to chronic conditions or acute injuries. Intra-articular treatments are generally performed for treating rheumatoid arthritis of the knee, acute gout and osteoarthritis.
Hyaluronic Acid
It is a naturally occurring substance commonly found in synovial fluids that provide lubrication to the joints. As osteoarthritis causes the break-down of this substance, intra-articular injections are administered to patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis for reducing pain, increasing lubrication and improving the range of motion in the joint.
Local Anaesthetics
Doctors sometimes deliver local anaesthesia via intra-articular injections to provide relief from pain after an arthroscopic surgery.
