Dr Sudarshan Ballal said, it is important to know that the preparations and precautions are similar for any form of Covid - Omicron, Delta, or any other variant. The measures to be taken are to prevent the spread of the virus through Covid-appropriate behavior like masking, distancing, hand-washing, and avoiding large crowds, especially indoors in poorly ventilated areas.

Awareness programs to increase public participation in preventing the spread of this virus are also needed. Although in general Omicron is less virulent than the Delta variant, it spreads more rapidly. Hence if a large number of people get infected in a short period of time, with even a small percentage requiring institutionalized care, it may put some stress on the healthcare infrastructure, said Dr. Sudarshan Ballal.

I would like to draw some parallels between what happened between the first, second, and third waves of COVID. In the first wave, obviously, the healthcare workers were unprepared, and a large number of them became sick and some of the actions required state ICU, and unfortunately, quite a few also lost their lives. However, the second one which was extremely brutal, to some extent spared the healthcare workers because they were all vaccinated and far better prepared for personal protection. So even though the number of cases in the society was high, and the mortality was high, by and large, the health care workers were sort of spared. What we are seeing now is that this disease is spreading like wildfire doubling time of fewer than 48 hours, said Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman, Manipal Hospitals.

Mr. Dilip Jose said, While hospitals took the lead, the entire healthcare ecosystem, including pharma, MedTech, and insurance companies, collaborated to put up an agile response. Hopefully, the momentum will sustain, and as a country, we will be better placed to tackle any other pandemic, should that occur.

Dr Sudarshan Ballal said, Obviously as was mentioned, by all of us, the number of cases is going up exponentially. Bangalore has probably about 80% of the total number of cases in Karnataka. Just one small comment I wanted to make before I move further. You showed the mortality has not changed in the last week or so. However, we must look at the fact that we still have not completely transitioned to Omicron. We still have a fair number of delta cases in certain cities.

Mr. Dilip Jose said, The pandemic has brought in many changes for our hospitals. At an operating level, there has been a greater acceptance of digital routes. At a design level, the last 18 months taught us not to hardwire hospitals and to recognize the importance of flexibility of infrastructure, and at a more basic level, it has underscored the need for efficiency so as to minimize the effect of economic shocks.

Mr. Dilip Jose said, In 2021 we saw a significant partnership between Government and the healthcare sector to fight the pandemic as well as in the massive vaccination drive that was undertaken by the nation. The results augur well for this collaboration to continue in the future too. While everyone can be proud of the progress made so far, it is imperative to realize that a lot of work still lies ahead.
