Dr H Sudarshan Ballal said , “The problem of hyper acute rejection which is seen with all xenotransplantations was avoided by genetically modifying the carbohydrate moiety of the pig gene so that the pig kidney would not mount a hyper acute response in the host”.

Being young does not make you immune to heart attacks. Please do not take your health for granted. I think there is a significant role for preventive health checks to find out the chances of developing heart disease or not. So, do not ignore your health, even if you are young. Regular health checkups can help to detect an occult disease which can be certainly cured, said Dr. H Sudarshan Ballal

With the recent acquisitions, our network with 27 facilities and more than 7,600 beds is now present across 15 cities. However, there are several more geographies that we would like to serve. Kerala, where Manipal is a household name because of its deep roots in education, is a state in which we are keen to be present. The eastern part of India is still quite underserved in high-quality healthcare and we would like to explore opportunities there. We would also like to deepen our presence in Maharashtra and the national capital region. With the consolidation phase that the healthcare sector is now witnessing, in part because of the consequences of the pandemic, we are optimistic about brownfield expansions that fit in well with our plans, said Mr. Dilip Jose, MD & CEO, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt Ltd.

Health Information Technology (HIT) systems are crucial to health infrastructure. It is usually managed across computerised systems which pave the way for insecure exchange of data and information across various stakeholders like healthcare providers, patients, government, pharma companies, and insurers, said Mr Nandkishor Dhomne.

We need to watch this carefully. We do not know enough about it to see if this is a mutation that is all infectious or more deadly. So it is important that we continue to have very aggressive surveillance and genomic analysis of the virus. So that if there is a spur of cases of this new variant, and if we do find that it is more infectious, then we need to be extra cautious to prevent the third wave, said Dr. H Sudarshan Ballal.

India has made enviable progress in the immunisation drive for adults and soon with a scientific basis and supply-side comfort, it would be time to start the same for children. Manipal Hospitals have been a major contributor to the adult vaccination programme. We had created dedicated teams and clinics both at our hospitals and off-site for this. The expertise and infrastructure that was developed is easily fungible to a paediatric programme and we would look forward to once again being an active participant when that is launched, said Mr Dilip Jose.

No vaccine shot should be wasted. If the private sector has excess stock, one should go for outreach programmes and give it for free, if needed, said Mr. Dilip Jose.

Dr H Sudarshan Ballal said, “Most of the large urban centres, including the metropolitan cities, have registered fairly good vaccine coverage. The requirement to get vaccinated in order to attend work or to travel or even shop coupled with relatively lower vaccine hesitancy could have played a role in a large number of people getting the shot. It is wonderful news that rural areas too, in general, are not lagging behind in vaccination. In fact, data show that many districts, on average, have provided over 80 per cent of their population with at least one vaccine dose; the coverage of the second dose is about 30 per cent. Fortunately, there does not seem to be a sharp urban-rural divide in terms of vaccination coverage.”
