Imaging Features and Conditions of Aging Spine

Ageing is inevitable; our bodies undergo several physiological changes with age, and the spine is no exception. It is important to recognise that abnormalities identified during MRI scans are not uncommon, and often, these findings simply indicate typical age-related changes and are not conditions warranting immediate alarm. Common age-related spinal changes include spinal arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis. By enhancing our understanding and broadening our knowledge of these age-related changes, we can have a more comprehensive insight into our spine health.

Degenerative disc disease

Despite the word disease in its name, degenerative disc disease simply refers to age-related degeneration or deterioration predominantly driven by reduced elasticity and the diminished cushioning effect of the intervertebral discs. This natural wear and tear may lead to disc bulging or herniation and decreased disc height, as seen on MRI scans under the supervision of a neurosurgeon in Bangalore. Importantly, these degenerative changes often remain asymptomatic and generally, do not require immediate medical attention.

Spinal Arthritis

Also known as spinal osteoarthritis or spondylosis, spinal arthritis is a  common MRI finding in the ageing spine. It occurs due to the degeneration of the spinal joints' cartilage lining, potentially causing symptoms such as pain, stiffness, limited range of motion in the affected region, the formation of bone spurs, and joint inflammation. However, immediate medical attention is not always required.

Spinal Stenosis

This term describes the narrowing of the spinal canal that may exert pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. Age-related alterations such as protruding discs, bone spurs, or thicker ligaments can contribute to this narrowing.  Symptoms may include pain, numbness, a tingling sensation in the limbs or weakness. However,  not all cases of spinal stenosis warrant surgical intervention.  Many individuals with mild spinal stenosis can manage their symptoms using conservative therapies like physical therapy and pain relief methods.

Importance of Consulting a Healthcare Professional

It's paramount to seek consultation with a spine expert at the neurosurgery hospital in Bangalore, or a relevant healthcare professional to interpret  MRI scans appropriately. Although these age-related changes are part and parcel of the natural ageing process and generally not a cause for alarm, it is important to be assessed the severity of the degenerative changes. This assessment will inform the need for any additional diagnostic procedures or medical interventions.

Preserving Spinal Health

Even though age-related changes in the spine are a normal part of ageing,  there are proactive measures that one can adopt to maintain a  healthy spine and reduce discomfort. Regular physical activity, emphasising flexibility, core strength, and proper body mechanics, helps to strengthen the spine and mitigate the effects of these ageing-related changes. For optimal spinal health, it is also critical to maintain a healthy weight, prioritise posture, and refrain from placing undue strain on your back.

Discovering certain age-related spinal changes on an MRI scan with progressing age is expected. Consulting a spine specialist and gaining a thorough understanding of these typical ageing changes enables us to adopt a well-informed approach to managing our spinal health. Remember, while age-related changes are inevitable, maintaining a healthy spine is a tangible goal. This can be achieved by staying physically active, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and seeking timely and expert advice.
