Emergency Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a minimally invasive procedure to open blocked coronary arteries allowing unobstructed blood flow to the heart. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and uses X-ray to help the cardiologist view the site of your blocked artery. An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted in your arm and you will be given a sedating medication. A small needle puncture is made on the hand or groin, to insert a sheath after which a guiding catheter, PTCA wire with the help of a balloon is run to the site of the blockage. Once at the site of the narrowing in the artery, the cardiologist will inflate and deflate the balloon several times to compress the plaque and open the artery.

Their expert care and concern for each patient’s safety and comfort is why Manipal Hospital is a leading name in comprehensive cardiac related services.
Solutions in PCI
PCI is a non-surgical procedure that relieves the heart muscle of obstruction of blood flow of the arteries. This type of angioplasty uses balloons, stents and Atherectomy devices to clear the arteries. This is done by inserting a tiny balloon catheter or tube into the blocked artery through the groin or wrist. The balloon is inflated to enlarge the narrowing artery to allow the blood to flow uninhibited. This PCI can not only relieve chest pain or angina but also minimise or stop a heart attack so the patient need not go through a bypass surgery.
Complexities in PCI
While PCI is a safe route to clearing the blocked arteries there could be rare cases of re-narrowing of your artery. There could be chances of blood clots forming within stents even after the procedure, or perhaps bleeding. However, at Manipal Hospitals our cardiac experts who perform PCI are thoroughly competent at performing routine diagnostic cardiac catheterization and angiographic procedures. Prior tests are conducted to prevent any complications in patients.
Success of PCI
PTCA has been rapidly established as the most reliable therapeutic procedure in patients of coronary artery disease. According to statistics, 95 percent of all PTCA cases are successful and the rest have had recurrences of blockages due to varied reasons. Currently the recurrent rate after a stent is 10 percent.
Infection control protocol
Manipal Hospitals has put in place a stringent infection control protocol that ensures each patient is under complete sterile care and safety, from infections of any kind. Post PTCA which lasts from 30 – 60 minutes, patients are monitored. The catheters are removed after 4 to 12 hours depending on the stabilised artery. Most patients are discharged the day after the procedure.
