Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Device Closure
PDA is an unclosed hole in the aorta, the main artery that carries blood away from your heart. In a normal heart, its left side pumps blood only to the body while the right pumps blood to the lungs. If you have PDA, extra blood gets pumped from your body artery or aorta into the lung (pulmonary) arteries. If the PDA is large, the extra blood being pumped into the lung arteries makes the heart and lungs work harder and the lungs can become congested causing breathlessness or high pressure in the lungs. Over time, it may cause permanent damage to the lung blood vessels.
Solutions in PDA Device Closure
Your cardiothoracic surgeon will take the minimally invasive route to make an incision in the left side of your chest, between the ribs. He closes the PDA by tying it with suture (thread-like material) or by permanently placing a small metal clip around it to squeeze it closed. Sometimes, a surgical patch is used.
